(Mail and Empire.):. W. S, D., St. Marys,—Qu.—Is it lawful to place the rural mail box within four feet of the travelled road ? (2) ;In case a vehicle: is broken, by coming in contact with. the mail box, who would be responsible for the damage 2 Ans.—The regulation with regard to placing rural mail post boxes, is, "that they shall be placed near en- ough to the travelled road to enable the courier to deposit the mail in the box without dismounting from: his vehicle." I should - think that the post might be .placed ever nearer to the traveled road than, four feet. (2) If the posts have been legally placed near to the traveled road; those driving vehicles_ along the road should take care not to run into. those posts. "Phe posts are there for the convenience of the public, just as bridges are pleced,on the• highways for the canvensenpe of the public. If a traveler comes into contact with the side of a bridge and inur,o his, vehicle he would not have any legal ;right to claim; damages from. anybody, and on the saline grin- ciple a travoler, coming into collision with a rural mail box post cannot. claim damages from anybody, but the traveler may have to pay for the damage done to the post.
