SUNDAY'S MASS MEETING.
"There were 6185 liquor licenses is-
sued- by the Ontario Government in
1875, and only 1836' in 11712," said
the Rev. J. W. Aikens in the town
hall on Sunday afternoon speaking
to an audience that filled the hall.
"Local option is essentially a mor-
al question," he remarked," and if
the Christian people of Clinton do
their duty on polling day the num-
ber of licenses in Ontario will be still
further reduced." Mr. Aikens has
been travelling all over Canada for
the past three years and he claimed
that temperance was gaining in pop-
ularity in every province. Speaking
of the problem of hotel accommoda-
tion ho said : "Hotels can he
conducted better without the bar.
One hotel at which I stayed in Van-
couver claimed to have made $50,-
000 last year and had no bar at-
tached." He also quoted a travel-
ler as saying that of the, "fifty-one
towns in which he did business thir-
ty-eight were under local option and
in no case was the acconnnoclation
worse than under license and in
many cases it was better."
"Who ever heard of a man adver-
tising his Fanta as being 'near a
bar -room,' " continued Mr, Aikens,
"but you will frequently sec a farm
advertised ab being within one, two
or three miles of a church, or
school. The fact of the matter is
that the bar is the natural enemy
of the Church, the Home and the
School and in every case stands for
self-indulgance. I never met a man
in the ruin business who was not
too good for the business and in my
opinion the man who votes for the
continuance of the bar should be•
ashamed to look a boy in the face.
Vote for the abolition of the bar by
the only method at present avail-
able. Here are thirty urgent rea-
sons why you should," he concluded,
indicating a seatful of bright -look-
ing boys occupying the front seat.
Mr. Athens spoke in Wesley church
on Sunday morning and went to
Seaforth for the evening.
