TA.% RATE. 29i.MILLS,
On Monday evening the town ooun-
oil struck the tax rate at 29- mills,
effecting a half mill: reduction, by
lopping $350 off • tete amount the
Model School Board asked or, The
board is understood 'to be not at all
pleased at the reduction and may in-
sist upon the full amount asked for,
$5,000, and in in that event the rate
will be three cents on the dollar,
Mr. Wiltse-01 course we know that
what the School Board asks •for we
are obliged to give, but in our`ppia-
ion $5,250 is ample for the schools
requirements, for the next year. The
cub of $350 we. propose will enable
us' to keep the rate at 29-e mills.
Mr. Clerk—The. School Board has a
balance which with the $5,250. should
be ample for its requiremcrats.
Some time ago Mr. S. S. Cooper,
g oop r,
mine- host of the Normandie, made a
proposition to the councillors re-
garding street lighting in front of
his hotel and block, He offered to
buy three, fancy metal posts with
five lamps to the post ae a cost of
over one hundred dollars, These he
asked the council to instal and pay
a portion of the lighting.
A report dealing with. the matter
ammo was brought in Monday evening re-
commending that the council pay the
of installation, cost z to alien about twenty
y
dollars, and for the lighting of one
•lamp to each post, the remaining
twelve lamps to he at Mr. Cooper's
expense.
In sepporting the report Mr. Ford
said : The better lighted the trvn is
the better it looks and we would be
pleased to see other business men
follow the example in the matter of
lighting set by Mr. Cooper and we
would be only too glad to give them
the same privilege. The oxpcnse to
the town will be small for the new
system which will enable as to cut
otI other lamps near by.
Mr. Cantelon—Does it not occur to
the council that it is bunching the
lights pretty well on the poetofIice
square whereas from the Mill to Mol -
sons' corner there is not a single'
light on the east side al the street.
1 don't, believe in giving any special
favors and if We are placing more
lamps I think the hack strceters are
the ones who should get them,
Mr. Paisley—I think the proposal a
good ono, a bargain for us, indeed.
It will be all right for the otvner of
the property, who mush pay the
much greater part of the expense and
it will be all right for us as rate-
payers who will pays comparatively
little.
Mr. Mayor—There. will be virtually
only two extra lamps.
Mr. Wiltse—One of the new &c-
lamp posts will he in front of my
store so 1 cannot say very much in
this connection. But really, how
many ci,bizens would go to the ex-
pense 11r, Cooper has already in-
curred. I am in favor of ineourag-
leg that sort of public spirit gad
woulii like to see others on front
street do as has been done.
Supt, Chant: Peratit me to sug-
gest that the Government be re-
quested to similiarly light the post -
office and receipt if customs. From
what the inspector has said I don't
think there would be much difficulty
in getting then, to comply with your
request. • •
Mr, Ford—The street committee
had an appropriation of $1300 and
,Bma d., i,nd, sftwsy $985. We now
purpose grading Jos,nh street and
providing it with proper , surface
drainage, Victoria . \i
g oii a street front— 'the
Elevator to the bridge will also re-
ceive our attention.
