County Constable Pellow made a
raid on the 'Hotel Bedford Saturday
afternoon. -After an hourOS search he
located sixteen bottles of liquor in a
vacant room adjoining the hotel and
property of Mr. Bedford. Two friends
of Mr. Bedford were trying to get the
liquor out by a back stairway, but
were caught in the act. The local
police assisted in the search.

enlisted with the Queen's Own Rifles
at Toronto.

Walter Carter, of Blyth, Veteran,
Receives News From France
Blyth, March 26- One son killed in
action at the heti le of Mons, and an-
other lying wounded in hospital, is the
experience of Walter Carter, sr., of
Blytb, who hae just received a letter
from the wounded man' telling the bad
news. No official word has yet reach
ed darter.
The, son who met death in the
trenches was .William. aged 30 years,
who semi five. years around Wingham
and Ripley, working on farms, and
thenreturned to England, where he
married. When war hi oke uut' he',
joined the Yorkshire Light Infantry
haying had 'training with the,
Canadian corps during his stay in this
countily. He leaves a wife and two
children.

The residence of Miss Joates. John
Street, has been sold to the Misses
Hclmes. The former will remove to
the West, and make her home with
relatives.
A Red Cross Convert is one of the
coming events in town. Brussels hae
been busy in the cause, and shipped
numerous bales of goods.
There was skating in the rink here
this week. A long season.
Brussels will likely have a teats in

again this year.
A disastrous tire oceuered here last
Saturday night, when the Pryne 51i11-
ing Company's gristmill was burned
to the ground. Fire broke out in the
top story at 7 o'clock 'tnd on account
of the height of the building the fire
fighters could do nothing to check it.
The mill was well equipped with mod-
ern machinery and will be a loss to
the owners, The boilerhouse and en.
rine room were all that WAS sawed.
The loss will tie in the neighborhood
of 520,0(10 with an insurance of 89000.
The fire is supposed to have originated
from the stovepipe. The mill was
built by Vanstone Brothers in 1886'
Amos, aged 54 years. Dr Amos came
to Eteter some years ago. He and
Dr Rollins were partners for some
time. They dissolved partnership and

The funeral of the late Mrs. Isaac
Miller, who =.died at her home on
George Street, on Wednesday, was
held Friday. Mrs. Miller had been in
good health until Friday of last week,
hen she took ill with pneumonia.
She was 84 years of age and is surviv
ed by one son, Isaac Miller, Vancouver
and one daughter, Mrs. N. T. Adams,
Blyth.
