The Clinton News Record, 1915-07-01, Page 5July 1st, I915 r _ Clinton News -Record `The Great Heart of England Warms to the Canadians. 7.Lw}vis 11T; x/sr/so. Following is a letter from Mr. is Manning. son of Mr. and Mrs. ter Manning o[ town, who is iShornelilfe, England :• Shortielifte Camp, June 1 "Dear Mother :-I have started tors, to you before but have n • *been able to finish them ' But goes, for a finished one. I have e. :to tell you. Don'<t forget to men it if ),you got the two letters wri while in the St, Lawrence. 'Whei *awoke Sunday morning after ma' the last letter to you we were in the (full and consequently u stheltea of land but alter' reaching' •open sea the old tub coitus-ehtoed roll and toss though' we never at `time had rough weather. ' It Wo "have been fierce if we had. We but one parade on Sunday for di survteh:. , On Moiulaiv we had • b -drill Each platoon of fifty-two had a' certain place to fall in a boat station, At first there solve confusion as streams of s going all ways were conflicting after same rearrangement things w .smoother. We had physical exesci in the morning and in the even 'boat drill with life belts on. Outs of these •n two )read CSallwe 1 had al do .was. eat and sleep; Terre w two Sittings at meals and I was ;the second one. .T. gave you before idea as to what our quarters iv 'like. On the second Saturday we gas to get nervous about submarii atilt had orders to lug our life he about with us wherever we went the ship. On Sunday night tho sleeping tevo decks down were order to sleep on deck and we slid so lyi in rows in a. slight fog or drizz 'TIe four machine guns of the B 'taken had been mounted on .dee two in the bow and two in t stern and the squad practised f quently, firing at boxes thrown o • On Monday morning wi-on the log li oil two British destroyers were se Coming up fill steam. They had Ie (lueenstone teerpretious, day at noon act as our escort. They brought nu of submarines and our course was a tared for Plymouth. The old boat p on full steam ahead with a destroy 'on each side as a lookout. We s< no suhs, and at eight o'clock th night we passed the Eddystone Ligle house and at ten o'clock we we Cafe in Plymouth harbor, The ligh on land sure did look good. It w interesting to watch the numeral searchlights flashing about the barb In tit!)horning we were -up early t see the place,. Ti is sonic harbor, Fo -tifications on all sides, sonic plainl in sight and others hidden to the ca uai .observer, It is solid rock o all sides, the shorn rising steeply o three sides and the fourth covers -with big stone buildings. C4ens peel ed out everywhere. ThtSie. were lots 'of boats in the harbor: from liners, cruisers, etc. to ;tugs. and fishing boats. It was a fine, bright day and everything showed up clearly. About ten o'clock a tug took us in tan' and We went up into the inner harbor. This is all fortified, too, every little Spot hits its gun and soldiers are everywhere, I the distance we could, see beautiful green fields. Che shore here is a mass of docks, dry clocks, mills, etc, and nue thing I saw I obeli never forget. You have `seen pictures of the old fighting frigates• with the tarsi in the rigging. We pas- sed three training ships like •ie'san'.c old "Victory" and the middies looked a solid -mass of humanity and the way they did cheer, Since landing that is One thing I have noticed. They do knew n \ how togive 1 e *, " a 0 d wC1C n . 0 1C g o and show a son that they are glad to see one., All along, our train passing old . men and women even down to kids would wave and cheer us as we pas- sed. The Canadians are niers stoical, The tug took. us a half mile up the river, a short trip I shall never for get. Wei anchored again and big fee - Tics came alongside and tools us all Off, two companies' at a time, It tools three long trains to carry us al) and on 'Tuesday at dee. o'clock we start- ed for Silorncliife a journey -of three hundred miles right. g t, across the, south- ern part of England, through Devon, •Sasses etc., to the east coast,, The trains ace curious. We bad' them, compartments and all. Our third class carriage seated eight, four on each side, lacing each other. 'There was no water or toilets en the trains. The English lads said these' coaches were for local tealns only. The little Conches and freight ears, (goods trains) make them look.like toy `trains. But, say, we did travel Six - Miles per hour is the average and we ;timed several nillee at eighty; Devoe county is the most beautiful place:I have. ever risen. All the fences are hedges and the, ' railroad' ran •through a slight valley so that' on both sides. to the tops of the hills, we could see rolling country all in crop' or pasture with occasional little. hits. of bush• The cute little fields With their -beautiful thick hedges run- ning rig-zag up the, liillsides' with sheep or• cows in this distance showing up' vividly oce 'the' green of the' pastures made a perfect moving picture as we chew :along. You could see the funny little narrow Country roads with sol- id hedges bordering them'. 'f'lsey ap peered so narrow that we wondered how two carts could pass and they -'rambled along, appearantly taking the gong way home, and from the car window we could see the sign hoards at tire. crossroads where roads branch - ,,ed oft to the little 'villages tucked away somewhere. Our Pirst stop was at' Exeter. As we'left Devon the country became a little leas like the Garden of Edon but 'still Iobked hotter than Ontario at its best. We shad a halt at Taunton Where we had a sandwich and a cup of tea. The x ecglislr tea is just as good as you read about. Our next stop was at :Reading. As We left Reading we . pas - •sed through a -nursery and seedgrow- ; ing . section. You can imagine ' what ace Englislt seed Zarin would look like. Gorgeous is a poor word. But from ail we got a -good recelptioce. It. was :evening and as. we passed along we saw middle aged business men -out watering tie . gar- den throw dowii,t e hose gni, rush to the hack gate to wave and cheer. It made us feel good, too, We got into Shornoliffe station at half past eleven and a we then lined up and marcltetl four miles to camp, all up grade, We got a bite toeat at 12.30 and with ten in a tont we got to sleep,,this finished 'thirteen. days and sixteen hours of travel and we were tried of motion. 1'iic Y.II,C,A. luau has just told. clree is that the stall for Canada closes, tonight so I must stip. I have been down to • Folkstone onoe but the records of that: trip aced my impressions of camp life I shall hold over until the next loftier. I took sonic pictures at Plymouth but have not had themes developed. I an) feeling fine. We have had a few clays' Bard work already. On our first day we lost our mascot "Sandy."
