eetth Anniversary
The Christian Guardian comment -
orates ninety years of existence by the
publication of an admirable "birthday
number." The Guardian lays claim
to be the oldest religious weekly in
Canada, and has done not a little dur-
ing its lifetime to further the best in-
terests of the Dominion. Its souvenir
issue is an excellent one.
A Bright Idea
To discover a means Of publishing
the 'assessment roll of the town with-
out much extra expenso has been
solved in Pore Hope. The assessment
of each ratepayer is put in the vot-
ers' list fur the first time this year,
and by this means a more equitable
assessment Is bound to result. It might
be tried with advantage in Clinton next
year,

(=armors' Income Tax
There is a prevalent motion that a
great many farmet•s 'evaded the Fed-
eral Income tax, but R. W. Breadner,
Commissioner of Taxation for the De-
partment of Finance, gave evidence on
October 9th. last which is illuminating.
The lucome 'Inc th Canada is practic-
ally the same as in the United States,
yet 01 the State of Michigan there
were only 84 farmers assessed whereas
in Ohtarlo there were 962. In the two
Dakotas there were less than 200;
in Manitoba there were 1 601; in
California there were about 1600; in
Saskatchewan there were 305 4; in
Alberta 3126. As Quebec farmers as-
sessed number 8,4 4 4 t as against 1 8,-
0 00 in the United States. . That is a
pretty fair showing in view of the large
outliner engaged in farming in the
United Slaw, anu aava,ieett stage
