- ,One month from tomorrow' is
IChristnmas clary, It is trot, too seen to
•begin to `"do yoiu'• Christmas shop-
ping early,"
This is "Canadian Anthers' -;week,"
How many Canadian yarns, that is
•oie4side of election yarns, have you
reed this week?,
* * i •
"Has Mr, ging' signed 'the recall?"
asks The Goderich Signal, No, He
doesn't need to, The people of North
York will see that he is not returned
to Ottawa,
The editor of the' Exeter Mime'
Grits is afraid the women will take
so long in the polling booths that
'then won't be able -to poll their votes
-oh eleotion day. Better get it done
early, before friend wife gets up
=town,
The Mitchell Advocate and the Ex.
,titer Advocate are carrying on a die-
.cussion.about the relative beauty of
Mitchell and Exeter girls' ankles.
Did you ever hear of such frivolity,
eentd right in the nrRiddle of an elec-
lion campaign, too?
* *
The silence of the Simcoe Reform-
• -et in this election campaign is more
eloquent than pages of matter, The
Reformer cannot and will not sup-
port Mr, King, and, like the major-
ity of Liberal journals in Canada at
-the present time, is just saying noth-
ing at all.
"The first duty of Canadians is
"te. turn the Government out," de-
'.elared James -Murdock in Clinton on
Friday. His declaration might have
carried more weight if he had given
his hearers some idea of what sort
of a government -would be put in
its place.
* e * *
Presumably Mr. Murdock ac-
knowledges Hon. Mackenzie :Bing as
his leader but nobody would suspect
it from hearing him speak. Only once
'did he mention his name in his Clin-
ton address and that was a casual
mention.- Are the Liberal candidates
`not proud of their leader?'`
Mr. Murdock gave one' piece of
good advice on Friday evening. He
said: "Do not waste your vote,"
'The only way to be sure that you
will not waste your vote is to give
it to the Government candidate, Mr.
Merner. A vote cast for either of
'the other two will be indeed "wasted."
* * * *
"Why did' 'Canadians turn down
the reciprocity pact in 1911?" asked
Mr. McMillan on Friday evenhng.-
It was generally conceded at the
time, and we have had no reason to
•change our minds since, that it was
'because Canadians did not wish Can-
ada to become an "adjunct to the
'United States,"
* * * *
The only definite statement of
policy made by Mr. McMillan before
a meeting of electors in Clinton on
Friday evening last was that, should
the Liberals be returned to power on
Dee, 6th, they would endeavor to
revive reciprocity. The Liberals were
defeated on that policy in 1911 and
•Canada has not changed its mind in
that matter .since,
• 5 R *
"If opposition speakers would
-spend half an hour in telling electors
what they intend doing if given a
chance," remarked a very level-
headed man in discussing the meet-
ing 'on Friday evening, "instead of
two hours denouncing the present
government, "they would have more
'chance of success."
• * * •
Mr. Murdock says he has known
railroads to be "deliberately run in-
to the ground," and as he has been
,connected with railroads for the
past thirty years he ought to kilo".
It is to the advantage of the present
'Government to see that the Canadian..
National Railways are made a sue -
,cess. It might be safer to leave it
lir charge until the roads are on a
paying basis at least. The Govern-
ment which took over the roads will
'not "deliberately run them into the
ground,„ •
* * •
"Free trade 'would have no
more ill effects in Canada than free
trade bas had between the States,".
'declared Mr. McMillan • at his meet-
ing on Friday evening. We have
nothing to do with the inter -state
Crede policy of the United States.
But Canada is not a State of the.
Union and does not propose to be-
come one. Canada. If she is to be-
come a great nation within the Em-
pire, which is 'the vision real Can-
adians have' for this loved' land,
she must make her own 'trade policy,
to suit her needs. What would suit
the different states, under one fed-
eral government, might not suit
Canada at all,
•**m.
Mr. Moighen is the only party
leader in Canada today who -thinks
nationally, talks nationally and has a
'policy for the whole of Canada, Mr.
Crerar, with his eyes on the west,
thinks only df the farming imple-.
ments which he imagines would be
-cheaper if the duty was taken off,
Mr, ,iring talks glibly of the Liber-
al platform, with its lowering of
tariff on many aliolee and its long
free list, in time woes but Cannot so
much as mmmeettion it even as a "chart"
in Quebec, while in Ontario he talks
generalities prcl leaves his hearers
in ignoranco'of what his policy is to
be. Those who wish this counter
governor: on the broad policy of the
greatest good to the greatest ram -
her taking .into consideration the
chat, west and middle, will do his
beat to see that Mr. Moighen is re-
turned with a large enough majority
to be able Mcarry be easily'andj
smoothly, The only- way a South
Herosi r t oterMin assist 'to that end is
to nast it vote •:for, the C,ov'erimntent
eandkiete,--Me.::limner, on Doe. Goin,'
One watched and waited in vain
on Friday evening for one construe -
Live ordticisni on the pert of either
Me, McMahan or Mr, Mttrcloe'1r. Is
anyone any the wiser ins to the pol.
icy of the Liberals if. by .ehatlee they
should be returned to power, except
that they would go again to Washe
•n„
a gtnt7 rind try ant: revive the r•ect«
procity pact?
* *„
In a studied parenthesis Mr, Me -
Milieu in his speech on Friday ev
ening expressed his belief that the
government should give the returned
soldier special ernsideration, Ib has
not been forgotten, however', that
the last time Mr, McMillan appeared
before "the elector's of ,South Huron
he was against sending 'reinforce.
merits to the soldiers then in France.
* n, * *
"When an ex -reeve of Goclerich
township says the Liberal candidate
in South Huron is one hundred per
cent, ahead of the other two candi-
dates in ability, etc„ there most be
some truth in the statement.” -New
Era, It doesn"t follow at all. An
ex -reeve is just as likely to be mis-
taken as the 'editor of the New Era,
whom we suspect, agrees with him.
Who is this ex -reeve, by the way'?
* * * •
The Government was indeed un-
fortunate, or was it criminal ? in ap-
pointing only one man of any hon-
esty or backbone to the Board of
Conrperce. Three men of such simon
pure patriotism as Mr, Murdock
surely should have been able to do
something. One wonders, in face of
the testimony of "Honest" James,
why they didn't. He says they had
the law on their side.
