J, J, MIDDLETON Provitinial Board of Health, Ontario Dr, Middleton will bo glad to answer queottons on Public Health Mats ,-. tees through this column, Address nim at Spadina House, Spadini), °reef:out, Toronto. In order that the public may realize the Importance of early treatment of canner the following Information is of vital assistance, It is, no exaggera- tion to say than if Acted upon, the Melt lvould be the saying annually of many h-undreds of hem', which. at 'present ere inevitably lost. Read time carefully mid remember • them;• ' 0 (1), Canemr,. in its early end curable stage, gives use to no pain nor synape UM of 111-bealthewhatover, (2) Neverthelees, in itscommonest eituations, the Signs of it in ite early ,etege are conspicuously manifest. 1(3) In Case of any swelling occur- ring in ethe breast pi' a woman after 40 years of age, a medical men -hold eat once be consulted. A large propor- tion of such swelling are cancer. (4) Any 'bleeding, however trivial, occurring* after the chauge of life means almost invariably cancer, and •cencee., which is then curable: If neg- • lected till pain occurs, it means can- 'ner which is almost always incurable. (5) Any irregular bleeding occur- ring at the 'change of life should in- variably , be submitted to a doctor's investigation. It is not the natural method 'of the onset of the change of 'life, and in •a large member of cases means commencing cancer. (0) Any Wart' or sore' occurring espontaneously on Elm lower lip in a man over 45 years of age is almost • certainly, cancer If removed at once the cure is certain, if neglected the result is inevitably fatal. • (7) Any sore or swelling occur- ring on the tongue or inside the mouth in man atter 45 years of age, should be submitted to investigation without delay, .and the decision at once at by 'an Mort microseepicai exam- irisilion it ie cancer or not A very large proportion of each sore, or swelling occurring at this time of life are cancer, and If negleolnd for only a few weeks the 'result is almost invariably fatal, If removed at once the pinepect of cure is good. (3) Any bleeding occurring from the bowel after 45 years of age, com- monly supposed 'by the public to be "piles," should be submitted to in- vestigation once. A large propor- tion of sun cases are cancer, which at this stage is perfectly curable. (9) When Warts, moles., or other growths on the skin are exposed to constant irritation they should be im- mediately rentoved. A large number of them-, if neglected, terminate ill cancer, • (10) Avoid irritation and the tongue and cheeks by broken, jagged teeth, and 'of the lower lip by clay pipes. Many of these irritation's, if neglectecinterminate in cancer. Certain pzedisPosing factors in the causation of cancer are now pretty generally- accepted. Some of these are beyond individual control; ethers., however, such as occupation and hab- its 'of life (determining .a localized, chronic irritation or inflamation) and suspicious growth in connection with old scars and simple tumors, call for more general recognition among the public in order that preventive mea- sures and early treatment may be put in operation,. • IMMI•13C.IZOO, IRRIGATION IN WESTERN CANADA 'CONVENTION HELD AT . • VERNON,. B.C: .Acklressed by Able Speakers on Engineering, Agricultural and Economic Aspects of Irrigation. One cf the most lueceeefut =vein nines held in Western, Canada in re- -tent nears took place at Vernon, Bri- tish. Columbia, during the last montb., when, after a lapse of fourteen years, nirrigationiets cf Western Caaarla. for 'the seccnd time, held their annual -meeting thero, the occasion being the :fifteenth annual convention of the Western Canada Irrigation Associa- 'non. The main reason for the success of 'this convention ryas the excellent pro- gram et addresses. that had been an: - ganged. The subjects covered engine- ferings agelcultUral, econoMic, legal and administrative aspectsof irrige- Ition, and were delivered by able speakers, • In two inspiring and instructive ad - drum% Dr. John A. Wititsog, Print - tent of the University of Utah, gave 'some very good advice on the fundas :mental principles of Irrigation farm- ing- pradice. He told his audience that !irrigation should ennays be, and in a good system of agriculture always was, supplementary to the natural raintall. Most. of the surface off the earth was arid or semi -arid.. About • -one-quarter of the earth's surface re - calved less- than ten inchee of rainfall annually, and with our present know- ledge could be reclaimed only by ir- rigation, Over another vast area, comprising an additional thirty per cent, of the earth's- surface, the rain. fail was between ten and, twenty inihes. On this area the chief exten- sive more could be grown without ir- rigation., but the intensive. crepe de- manded the help of irrigation. Nearly six -tenths of the earth's seance could be re-claimed, if at -all, only by irriga- tion or dry farming. The remaining four -tenths would be helped materially by a system of. irrigation. Water Alone Not Sufficient. Dr. Widtsoe advised his hearers not to expect water alone to produce crops. It was necessary far farmers to till the land in the best passible way. More harm might be- done by the use of too much water than too little. Ex- cessive irrigation would .cause their land to become water-logged. Just a sufficient quantity of moisture should be kept in the soil at all times to keep the plants growing without being stunted. He asserted than these who had ir- rigated farms could not expect to farm rightly and properly, large tracts of land; nor could they expect to farm Profitably tinder irrigation without an faifa and livestock to put back Into the soil- the organic matter that was take out of it by plant growth. L. C. ChaHesavorth, Chairman of the Irrigation Council of Alberta, explain- ed the work of that body and the rea- sons for its creation. Its functions -were to ettpervist the construction and operation of the large co-operative irrigation districts thee had been formed or were being formed in Al- berta, whose herein • by which the funds for the construction work .had been oh would be obtained would have the guarantee of the government. The credit of tine province load been pledged to tire extent of $4,400,000 by the eine of the bonds of the Leth- bridge Northern Irrigation District, the first of these large systems or - veneer]. Construction work on tills - system was now under way and it was hoped to have water flowing through the canals and ditches in 1923 to ir- rigate. about 105,000 acres, of tho most fertile land in Alberta. The Need of Reservoirs. Another bnportent stabjett that was diseuseed was the- necessity of reserv- ing reservoir sites. William Pearce, who brought this matter before the convention, said that there would come a time, le the not very distant future, when it would be considered a 'mime to _allow any water from our mountain streams to go to the sea if it could, by reasonable outlay, be penult for irrigation and domestic Purposes. A pernicious word is "inexhaust- ible." "Inexhaustible mountains -of ore, "inexhaustible" forests, "inex- haustibl•en fertility of the soil have all 'been greatly depleted, and some have been. wholly spent. We need to remind ourselves that neither coal nor oil non,' iron nor any other ore nor forests nor fertility can last perman- ently in the face of selfish exploitation or ignorant waste. • Why guess about, it— When you can know about it? Suppose a guide said— "This way there's a safe and pleasant road to your destination, with no risks or troubles on the way," and— "That way there's a road that a good many have stalled on and turned back from, but you may get through." Which would you take? Postum is a thoroughly agreeable and satisfying meal -time drink, and you're sure that it's perfectly safe for health. Tea and coffee contain drug qualities which disturb the health of many. Postum or tea and coffee? Which road? Why guess when you can know? Postum cornea in two forms: Instant Poottim (In tins) made instantly In the cup by the addition of boiling water. To be tired after exertion is natural,. Rest and food restore the -hody to nor., mei after such fatigue, But to be tired an the time is symptom of an anaemic condition that will not be Corrected until the blood is built up. Such an anaemic ceeditiou is so gradual' ho its approaeh and generally se Melting In acute pains, that it is often difficult to persuade the suffer- er to do.anything for it, But It is not a condition. that corrects itself. If the blood is not enriched the trouble will Morena. The nerves will be mks dernouristed and neuralgic pains will, follOw, Digestive dietimbances often -result from thin blood, sleep is disturbed and a general breakdown may OCCUr. Mr. Wilson Johnson, Nineveh. N.B., says: "A few years ago my system was in. a badly run down oondition. My nerves seemed always on edge, and I found myself -so weak that I could neatly do any work, I suffered from headaches and from pains- in the back and under the shoulders-, and was of- ten so sloe -pleas at night that when morning came I felt as tired as when I went to bed. I was taking medicine an the time, but it was- doing me no good. Then I read the testimonial of a* man -whose condition. hied been similar to mine, and who strongly re- commended Dr, Williams' Pink Pills. I decided to give this medicine a fair trial, and when I lied taken six boxes I felt much better, I continued Liking the pills until I had taken six mere boxes., and I can only say I am glad I did se, as I am now enjoying the best of health, and I advise ail men who feel run down, to give these pills a good trial." Dr. Williams' Pink Pills can be ob- tained from any dealer In medicine, or by, mail at 50 -cents a box or six boxes for $2.50 from The Dr. Wil- liams,' Medicine Cu, Brockville, Ont, An Oyster Mystery. In private life the -oyster is a very queer fish. You never knew whether you should address a, particular oyster tts "Mr." or "Mrst,". for the same crea- ture changes its' sex frequently. In the spring the oyster's mind turns to thoughts of love. Its conduct is gov- erned by the sex which it has as- sumed for the time being. If it is a temporary male, it becomes a father: if, on the other hand, it is for the time being a lady -oyster, then the cares of motherhood are uppermost Ito Its mind. The mother'oyster lays a large num- ber of eggs which she hatch -es not by sitting on them, but by keeping them In- her gills When they have hatched and swain away she heaves a sigh of relief and proceeds to become a male. Her erstwhile husband, who has now become feminine, is the mother of the next batch of babies! SAVED BABY'S LIFE Mrs. Alfred Tranchemontagne, St. Michel des Saints, Que., writes:— "Baby's Own Tablets are an excellent medicine, They saved my baby's. life and I can highly recommend them to all mothers." Mrs. Tranchemontagne's experience is that of thousands of other =there who have tested the worth of Baby's Own Tablets, The Tablets aro a sure and safe medicine for little once and never fail to regu- late the bowels and stomach thus re- lieving all the minor ills from which children suffer. They aro sold by medicine dealers or by mail at 25 cents a ¶ox from The Dr. Williams' Medicine Co.-, Brockville, Ont. Keep Your Head.
