A picture heading a testimonial
in an almanac was the means , of
bringing together 'two war -.'me
comrades who last aa -w each other
in a shell -hole in France in :he
fall of 1917.
One of them is Gunner H. M,
Lake, now a resident of Elora,
while the other is E. B. "opud"
Spidell, now of Lunenburg County,
Nova Scotia.
Gunner Lake vrst met a fellow
gunner, known to him only as
"Spud," at a machine gun school
in England in 1915, They were in
the same class at the school, and
at the close, went to different
units. A few months later, at a
seaport, while about to sail to
France, they met again, and e), -
changed regimental numbers.
.,Late in 1917, during heavy shell
fire, the two men met again in a
shell hole, but only for a few
moments, and since that time, un -
141 a few days ago, neither had

Twenty-two years later, Mr. Lake
was glancing through the publica-
