of boiling water from a kettle are
put in similar tin. dishes exposed to
temperatures of zero or below, the
hot water will freeze first,
The explanation offered fo • this
curious result is that the hot water
will lose heat so rapidly due to fas-
ter evaporation and to radiation.
that it would soon "catch up" to the
temperature of the slower evapor-
ating and slower cooling water at
ordina:y temperatures.
After catching up with the cool
water, the water that had been. hot
world go on and freeze first because
the amount of water which ha'1even-
orated (turned to Water vapor)
would be so much greater than the
evaporation loss of the cool water
that there would be •a smaller mass
of liquid to turn to tce. It is, of
course, a matter of common observe,

DID YOU EVER
WONDER ?
If Hot Water Will Freeze More
Quickly Than Cold.
This much -debated point depends
on various factors, but under cer-
tain conditions it is possible that hot
water may freeze before cold water.
If a pint of tap water et ordinary
temperature and an equal amount
this is the case, it is possible to,use
water to obtain oil from wells When
the oil production of a field begins
to dwindle, the remnants of the oil
in. the underground rock may be
forced out by water pressure. To
accomplish this, water is forced
down through carefully chosen wells
and the pressure tends to push. the
oil out through other wells in the
field,
If All Ebony Wood Is Black?
Such expressions as "black" as

one to suppose that all ebony wood
is coal -colored. That, however. is not
the case. The blaek •ebony w'vod Is
most highly prized, but there are
also varieties of ebony in which the
wood Is green,
