• CHAPTER 42
• Two Packages
This. was, not very, satisfactory
to the attorney, but neither was
the alternative. He did not quite
believe that •Mosely' would let his
men go as far as, the Diamond
Slash owner had indicated, but
dark rumors of his ;methods had
been bruited about the town.
Also, Silcott had .told him of the
recent attacks on his life, tel.
all this was the fight of the Ami-
ss., grant purchasers. Their law-
yer was employed to handle only
the legal end of it. Stratton un-
locked the safe and handed the
Gandara letters to Jim.
"I don't need to tell you how
important these are to our suit,"
he said. "You'll . be careful of
them. Will you take them to the
hams? You can't tonight. It's
closed."
Jim smiled. "If you knew
where' I was going to put them
they might as well be in your
(safe.. When Prentiss inquires,
just refer him to me."
"If he does," corrected Strat-
ton.
The attorney watched his client
going down the street, his slim
compact figure erect and jaunty.
There was something about this
cool and reckless youth that in-
spired confidence.
As Jini moved downthe street
toward the plaza he became aware
that he was beingfollowed by a
Mexican vaquero, The man might.
simply be going in the same direr-
,, tion as Silcott, or he might have
eei'r-de,puted to trail' him. Jim
decided to 'filed-out.He. stepped
into a drygoods store and' bought
a shirt. When he came out the
vaquero was looking in the show
window at: some gay •bandanna
handkerchiefs.
Silcott Trailed
Jim crossed the plaza, his sha-
dow in attendance... At a sepoed
store he bought some .wrapping
paper and a ball of string. From
there ha went to his hotel and
wrapped two packages. In one
. ' were the Gandara lettere, and in
the other a folded copy of the
latest issue of the "New Mexica£s. L.
With a pencil he marked one of
the little parcels ii; order not -to

The, vaquero was still on the

to the postuffice and .from the
window watched him take the per -
eel from his coat pocket and ad-
dress it. His black eyes observed
the Diamond. Slash roan hand the

to be sent to its destination,
Jim had one More' call to'`inake'
before he repotted at the 'Win-
dom. He stopped at a saddlery
store just below the plaza to see:
its proprietor, an 'old friend • who
had ridden the brush country of
Texas with his father.
From the doorway, Jim called.
in cheerily, "How you making it
with that saddle 1 ordered, old-
timer?"
Homer Caldwell was a big lank
man close to sixty, with a long.
reach of well -muscled limb.-- Re
had a lean bony face with a hawk-
like ..nose and deep piercing eyes
gleaming out beneath grizzled
brows. Even in the store he wore
a wide sombrero and .. cowboy
boots into the tops of which the
legs of his jeans were thrust.
The Ruse
If he was Surprised at this ref-
erence to
ef-erence''to`` the order for a saddle

gave -1to" sign of it. Perhaps Silt
cott's wink tipped him off.
"Why, I'm'makin' right smart
progress," he said. "But,' didn't
expect you here eo soon, I had
some trouble fixing up the skirt
with the sudadero just the way
you wanted it.. You're such a par-
ticular buzzard, Red.-. Come along
in and have a look-see."
Jim walked into the store and
pretended to examine the tree of
a saddle• which rested on a frame
and had not yet been completely
draped.
"It's shaping `Tine," he said.
"Listen, Homer. I'm being watch-
ed. Keep up talk about the
saddle."
Caldwell talked, his eyes on Silt
eott who had drawn a parcel from
ar
under his coat and was apparent-

"Tell Me °if IIYn being noticed

The,Prairie Church
In Community Life
They Play a Big Part, Says
The Windsor Star
In the small towns on the Can-
. adieu prairies,°there is always the,
church. Often it is a plain white
building. Frequently It could do
with a fresh • coat of paint. 0a.!
gregaations% are not large. Some
times the minister, or student mis-
sionary,
has only a dozen or so
at the services. Often, outside as-
sistance has to be given to help
the finances.
But, even if as many people as
might do not attend these little
churches, they still play a his
part in the community' life. They
are the gathering places for the
people who are struggling to keep
progressive thought and practical
deeds on a high plane.
There ate some who make' fun ,
of these little country churches,

towel kept ready on the shelf in
the coat closet for the exejusive
purpose of brushing your coat.
At least once a week, wipe' the::
entire coat, inside and out, brush-
ing the fur gently with long
strokes in one direction. Go over
the whole coat—back, front, col-
lar and sleeves. You will be sur-
prised at the amountf dust that o
will collect on the turkish towel,

of the fur after its brushing.
On special occasions, if you
want to look really elegant, have
another person go over the, coat
the last thing after you have put
it on.
