GRASS I
I wonder Ieow many have ever con- ,
sidered why our rich prairie soils are
so abundantly milled with nitrogen. I
No legrunes of any consequence are I
Present in the native vegetation,
either in the Canadian, West, mid-
western United States or any other
grass agricultural areas. Yet, the
Protein in the wheat from the Canad-
ian West is distinctly higher than
that of Eastern wheat, Protein and
nitrogen are detinately related. I use
this example only to .illustrate the
presence of abundant nitrogen with
out legumes. Ilmost all the nitrogen
of aur prairie soils was collected '
from the air by the azotobactors.
This group of bacteria have played
a very important part in the mainten-
ance of soil productivity .in the Europ-
ean countries where a drain on soil
nutrients has been going cm for cen-
turies. In all staple European farm-
ing, grass has long been regarded as
essential in soil fertility maintenance.
I believe that part of this practice
can be traced to the role of the
azatobaetors.
So far, I have made no reference
to the work we are doing with grass
as a crop for dehydration -or for
grazing. I do not think it necessary
that I do so. Most of you know it is
quite possible to produce tremendous
quantities of grass with adequate fer-
tilizer. I shall make a statment• how-
ever, that under our conditions we
have found it necessary to use large
quantities of fertilizer to rebuild- grass
soils. At the present time our re,
search has demonstrated that grass
crops must be fertilized to produce
efficiently. Our soils haven't been
built um under grass, Fertilizers help
us to get this process under way.
Our latest developments have dem-
onstrated that we can supply fertili-
zer in one year to do us for four
subsequent years the amount depend-
ing, of course, upon' the inherent
fertility of the soil. We generally
apply from 800 to 1,200 pounds of fer-
tilizer in one application and mix
thoroughly with the soil to a depth
of at least six inches or preferably
eight. To obtain this mixture we
must employ twenty-four inch single
discs with a three and enehalf to
four inch cup. 'Stroh discs require
a very large tractor and each field
must be disked at least four times,
twice each way for best results. Such
au operation is costly but must be
done for best results. Perhaps this
extra cost is lust the present measure
of the destruction which has gone on
in the past.
We know, for example, that phos-
phate will move little in the soil, Per-
haps an. .inch in twenty years. What
good, thereefcre, is top dressing with
phosphate? Yet, most of our saoils'
are more deficient in phosphate than
any other single element, We try to
place the phosphate in that part of
the ground, where the grass roots can
absorb with maximum efficiency. As
this soil building process develops we
hope to build up our soil to the point
where we will have fertility levels
higher than any of the virgin land of
this province and approaching the
levels of the rich prairie soils of Iowa,
Illinois and Nebraska. When, this
Point is reached we will eventually
need less, and, leas fertilizer. Flow -
ever, have no fear for it will be
many years before a significant group
of our people have their soil built up
to this Point.
In the meantime, I would ask yen
to reoaean+ber that .grass Is essential,
that grass can most quickly restore
soil structure and fertility. Eventual -
Ty, this; can result in the use of less
and less fertilizer on better soils;
and more and more fertilizer on the
.vast acreage of poor soil to matte it
better. .
SnCh e.n accoripllsltrnertt can only
result In more, efficient production
and therefore Inieremse'd national
wealth. When we in Ontario begin
to use grass as we 'should, Your con-
tribution will have been obvious —
then You can rant to /Winn.
