The Brussels Post, 1949-9-14, Page 3FA L FAIR TIME IN ' NTARI vwsr r 3 -.•.' It's mighty tough to be four years old and lost. The little lady with the cone is really worried. In fact there probably wasn't another C.N.E. visitor as perturbed as she — with the possible exception of her own mother. We, YES, INDEEDI Everybody's go- ing to the Fair and Fair Secretaries throughout the Province will un- doubtedly be interested in one very smart idea used at the C.N.E. A room is set aside for the use of children up to 8 or 9 years of age. Water colour paints, paint brushes and an unlimited supply of paper are on hand, and the kiddies are given free rein and are allowed to paint -anything and everything they want. There are several young ladies is charge, and they tell your reporter 'that many parents leave the young ones to paint while they take in the Fair. This solves the problem of what to do with Junior, and it also solves Junior's problem of how to enjoy himself when he is still too young for the Midway attractions and toutch too young to enthuse over the agricultural exhibits. If there isn't room in any of the buildings at your Fair Grounds, it might be well worth while to set tip a tent for this purpose. The Pictures Shown On This Page Were Taken By The 4 Photographer As A Public Service WHO WOULD ever expect to meet Mrs. Santa Claus in .August? Well, that is exactly what your roving reporter did this week at the Canadian National Exhibition. Mrs. Santa is a kindly, smiling, gray- haired woman who also answers to the name of Mrs. Gertrude Clynes. Mrs. Clynes is in charge of the playground and building for lost children at the Canadian National Exhibition. She took the part of Mrs. Santa Claus at the Lions Club Carnival at the Colliseum last year, and told me with a smile that she had just conte down from the North Pole with her own ice cream freezer, at the request of Exhibition officials. Children instinctively like Irrs. Santa, and most of the little girls and boys who get lost at the Ex. And, after their first fright wears off, that it actually a real pleasure. The little girl with the ice cream cone, whose picture is on this page, had not quite reached this stage. • l nese d Wrongl—The weight guesser, an ever popular Midway attraction, missed badly when this picture was taken. The portly gentleman with glasses tipped the scales at 248, which was just about 11 lbs: more than the weight guesser estimated. They Play For His Majesty The King—One of the top attractions at the C.N.E. Bandshell is the Royal Marine Band. This outfit is second to none, and is popular with all who see and hear it.. This very colourful and superb body of then always accompanies His Majesty the King whenever he goes to sea. They are, in fact, the Kings Band and certainly look and sound the part. Two of the many youngsters who availed themselves of free paints, brushes and paper at the very popular Art Center, iscount Alexander,. Governor General of Canada, is shown leaving the I?':ecutive Offices of t'.p cam just prior to the official opening of the Exhibition. (`rrrutnnies took place in 85 -degree heat NEXT WEEK your roving photo- grapher and reporter will be cover- ing several of the small town fairs, and from past experience they know that the agricultural exhibits, the cooking contests and the livestock judging will be the No. 1 attrac- tions. At the C.N.E. emphasis is on the spectacular. The public has an 'entertain me" attitude. Everything is big, and wonderful, and it's a show worth seeing. BUT at the smaller local Fairs which we will be covering the tempo will be entirely different, and con- sequently you may look forward to an entirely different type of picture page. We shall be taking photos of baby contests, the winners of the greased pig contests, sulky • race winners, and a myriad of other events. Undoubtedly you or your neighbor will be in some of these pictures. So, starting next week we will be eovering the best fairs of them all, the "home town" fairs. Sitting in an Mr Force Vampire Jet is enough to make any , fellow want to fly — particularly if he is jttst 12 .years old.
