' Span Built 40 Years Ago
Stll Serves As Short -Cut
Across Maitland River
The aecoierated pace of modern
living demands our dependence on
slhort-carts but even four decades age,
the settlers used them to their ad-
vantage.
Forty years ago the late John
Shurrie lived on a farm (lot 23
con, 5, Morris) divided into two
parts by the south branch of the
Maitland River and cut off from
' the nearest main road by it. He
decided some means of access to
this road and to his neighbors was
needed end his solution was a sus-
pension bridge made entirely of
wire—even the floor of it, on which
were laid, later, wooden planks
for easier walking comfort.
A man named Close was the
bridge -builder in this enterprise.
This bridge still stands and Is
used, .at least, once a day, by the
present owner, Ward Sellers, when
he goes for :his mall. Mr. Sellers'
father purchased the farm from
' Mr. Shurrle.
I The bridge has a span of nine
rods, and is constructed of nine
1 gauge 42 -inch woven wire fencing,
1 Tt 10 supported by four heavy
cedar posts, 10 to 11 feet in height,
the :two north ones being the or-
iginals. These are of unusual sire,
1 bigger than any cedar logs cut in
'recent years, Their diameter is ap-
proximately 20 inches, Three -quar-
ter -inch steel nable brace wires
are fastened to cedar logs, anchor
ed in the ground and stoned in
with boulders for double security,
0 Suspended quite high in the air
Ithe bridge is reached by climbing
a wooden ladder at each end.
ITt has been wired three times—
twlee by Mr. Shurrie and ones by
Mt. Sellers, The spring iioocl of
1947 earrled away the bridge but
) It was rebuilt by Mr, Sellers, He
recalls bringing a calf across the
I structure with the aid of three other
1 men several years ago.
141x. 'Shurrle built another bridge,
one-half mile further down the civ -
11 er on the next farm, now occupied
by William Biernes, using the first
one as a pattern.
Deserted, except for the ocoaslon-
el fisherman, these bridges were
once the scene of .many a happy
Sunday gathering.
