DIED FOR THE EMPIRE.—The follow-
ing refers to a cousin of R, Leatherdale,
of Brussels :—The Coldwater Planet.—
When the news came that Gunner Ar-
not Leatherdale, youngest Son of Luke
and Mrs. Leatherdale, had been killed
in action on October 2nd, it cast a gloom
over the village and brought the war
very near to us. Arnot is the Stet Cold-
water boy to give his life for his country
in this great struggle. He went over-
8ea8 some months ago, Arnot was of a
quiet disposition and was a general
tavorite with all whd knew him. The
bereaved ones have the sympathy of a
large circle of friends in their deep af-
fliction.

A FINE OLD LADY DIES. — Monday
morning J T. Wood received the sad
news that his mother, who had been in
failing health For some years, bad passed
away at her home in Berlin, aged 82
years. She suffered a stroke'of paralys-
is Sunday evening and in her enfeebled
condition was unable to eolnbat it.
Deceased's maiden name was Elizabeth
Jessop and her birthplace Kirkburton,
England. She came to this continent
in 1857 to marry her old time lover,
Charles Wood, wbo had preceded her,

an expert woollen manufacturer, bad

LAST week John Batemah while work-
ing in the bush wee struck on the
sboulder by a tree and knocked over in-

SOME DR1vER.—Talk about fancy lady
drivers at our Fall Fairs—but they
haven't auythiug on one of our South-
ampton lady drivers who harnessed and
hitched up a horse to the buggy last
Monday and went out for a couple of
hours' drive around town with a lady
friend. The fact that the bit was not in
the borse's mouth didn't make any dif-
ference to this lady driver for she man-
aged it as well as a Wes.ern cowboy

British Red Lross has resulted in the
subscription of $1,400,000, up to date,

yet to report. In addition to the
County grant of $21,000, Huron
County's contributions up to the present
as reported to the Central Committee,
Parliament Buildings, '1'orouto, are as

brought little Miss Olie Kennedy back
