THURSDAY, DECEMBER'to, tele
FRANK S. BARNARD, eE M, P„ is to be
the new Lieutenant Governor of British
Columbia. He is an old'Purouto boy.
Acough mixture called "lfer
ar "
is one of the newest flukes by a Tor -
()Montan to prey on the patriotic at-
mosphere of this land. Isn't that en-
ough to choke you. The menipuletor
should be male swallow the cork.
WoxDRRs will never cease, Now it is
aToronto Jew, who was fined $s.00 and
costs in that city for selling pork on
Sunday. Pork mind you. 'Phere was
tbis to be said in extenuation that beans
were associated with the porcine parcel,
"Can you turn the heel yet Y" isa the.
quent query among the new knitting
experts who are busy on cocks for tbe
soldier boys. The knitting needle is
coming back to its own and it might not
do any harm to keep up the practice
even in time of peace.
TROUBLE is already brewing for On-
tario's Premier, Wednesday a conting-
ent of suffragettes waited on him at the
Parliament buildings, The Municipal
Vote for married women was one of the
leading requests. Premier Hearst will
find it difficult to serve two masters.
'FoxwARn March 1" appears to be the
order of the Czar and General loffre
and a very busy time is looked forward
to. Fortifications at certain points are
being strengthened by the Germans and
a giant struggle is slated for the second
stage of the great war.
THE Winter Fair at Guelph has been
as great a success as ever both in entries,
addresses and crowds. It is a very pope
lar and profitable agricultural event in
the year and is a money maker for the
Royal city as well. Several from this
part of the country attended and en-
joyed the outing,
PREMIER HEARST is being feted and
feasted at a number of points in the
way a P g of preliminary breaking in to his
new office. The new incumbent says he
purposes following the lines laid down
by the late J. P. Whitney in goveruing
this fair Province. Mr, Hearst is ex•
petted to give New Ontario a good
boos`.
SOIINDs sort of sacreligious to read of
areaoplanes doing scout work about
Mount Sinai on tbe look out for Turkish
troops. It is not guessing much to say
the old graveyards of Egypt may receive
a large addition to their population if
the Turks do not keep of that portion
of terra firma. British sharpshooters
do not waste many bullets.
SINCE the "cold water cure" proved
so effective in flooding out the German
armies the same role has been put on the
program at the Suez canal, Africa,
where the Turks were halted by the in
undation. Strategy is one of the win•
Hing cards in modern warfare and the
ways and means adopted are often uni-
que and unexpected.
MUMPS are having their innings at
Toronto University and measles are
playing hob with the common schools
in different parts of Perth Connty
and Goderich. These bodily ail-
ments were supposed to belong
to the kiddies but of course there
is no rule without an exception hence
adults are caught in the sweep and
made take the dope.
ONE trouble liquor sellers have to
contend with is that although whole-
salers may supply them with "mild"
forms of beer, cider. etc„ these:goods
will not stay mild and es a result are
working up trouble for both the sellers
and users. If the risk is run then of
course the alter consequences must be
looked;for.
Patera (.ouety Council in session last
week at Stratford voted a mill en the $
for Patriotic purposes, This will raise
tbe sum or $32,74o and the rate will he
struck next year for its payment by the
taxpayers, the money, we suppose, be-
ing borrowed in the meantime. This is
a generous and practical donation by
Perth Co. and will be paid in tors with-
out any ratepayer feeling it a special
burden on the principle "many hands
make light work." Perth bee a large
number of men in camp.
FALL campaign toot ball appears to be
just as rough as ever. The great
crowds who attend some of tbe city
games are decidedly opposed to a "rook-
itig chair" bout and they demand a
strenuous variety In the chase and
clash over the pigskin. One of the
marvels is that the catualties are not
quadrupled in number. There can be a
goodly measure of old fashioned
brutality, although this may not be a
pleasant name to designate it, in the
sport of today and the felloves who "mix
it" are often the heroes of the day with

NAVE PRETTY HAIR
Thick, Soft, Fluffy and ho

If your: hair is losing its natural

itching scalp cease, your hair is
doubly beautiful,
Parisian Sage sold by Jas. Fox and
at all counters, is just what you need
—a large bottle costa but 50 cents. It
surely makes the hair lustrous and
seem LW lee as abundant. You 050001

Foos General DeWet is having many
shades of experience these clays. lust
now ba is a prisoner in Johannesburg,
a South African city, and will probably
face a court martial RS a traitor. It is
thought the sinners who enticed him
were more to blame than he was but
may not be so easily secured. DeWet
was old enough and knew the situation
and should not have been caught by
chaff.
NORTH Huron Liberal Nominating
Convention will be held in Wingham
Town Hall Monday of next week, at 1
p. m. Addresses are expected from
Barrister Guthrie, M. P., of Guelph
Barrister Proudfoot, M. P. P , and
others. Three delegates are asked from
each polling sub -division but all Lil'erals
will be welcome to attend the gather-
ing. Office bearers will also be chosen
for the new riding the same day.
BETWEEN now and the end of the
year would be a fitting time for
thousands to practice Santa Claus arts
and get into the mood, if not there al-
ready, of remembering the poor, the
needy and the afflicted. Fortunately
there are few desitnte folk outside of
the cities in Ontario, unless they are so
by carelessness or mismanagement,
hence the opportunity of going afield
with our benevolences.

LATE JAMES POLLOCS.—There was
called to hie long home one of the
pioneer's of the Township of Morris, in
the person of James Pollock, who
passed to the Higher Life, Nov, 28th,
at the ripe age of 91 years and 2
months, being the oldest man in the
Township. He was born in County
Tyrone, Ireland, 1823, and carne to
Canada in 1847 and settled in Halton
County for a few years where he
married Jane Creighton, of Milton,
formerly from Tyrone Co. Ireland,
who predeceased him 14 years ago.
He came to the Township of Morris
Huron County, and settled on the
farm where he since resided. To
use his own words, It was nothing
but solid bush and he travel-
led three days to reach his destina-
tion. Three months later, hia wife in
company with Robert McGowan, sr.,
and son Walter and and wife, fol-
lowed hitt with their ox team. They
for years celebrated their wedding
tour as they called it, on the 15th of
February, 1854. All the others have
answered the Roll Call some years
ago except Walter who passed away
about two yearsago. Accommodation
then was something out of the
question. Mr. Pollock started out
with what provision he thought would
be necessary for the trip but it van
short on the evening of the second day
and he had nothing until the evening
of the third day when he came to a
shanty then occupied by Mr. Mc-
Kellar sr. That place was whete
Andrew Sloan now resides. He went
in and asked if he could get some-
thing to eat. Mrs. McKellar asked
him if he could eat potatoes, he said
"Yes, if they are boiled," He after-
wards boarded there until he built his
shanty and his wife came. She said
she could see nothing but the bush
around her and the sky above. They
were both blessed with good health.
He had his axe, 11 harrow pins and a
few other necessaries, and she had
quite a few accessories for house-
keeping. The first grain he grew he.
had no granary nor place to put it to
keep it from the bears so he scooped
out a tree filled it from the top cover-
ed it up and when he wantecl some
he bored a, bole near the bottom and
let it run out. They then did not
have rural mail delivery and it cost
something to get a letter. The poet=
office was at the home of Rev. J. B.
Taylor, 9th Cyn., then known as
Orchill Post Office. It cost 25 cents to
mall a letter to the Old Country.
Deceased helped 'draw the first loge
to build the first building in Blyth,
The first minister's name was Rev.
Anderson, In those days there was
little sickness and few deaths, He
used to say, "They would have to
kill someone to start a burying
ground." People•then were the happy
children of the forest and they wete
