WHAT about the old fashionedubli n c school examination ? They should be resurrected in every school section and attendance by the ratepayers that would cheer the heart of the teacher and put the pupils on their mettle. Give the Patriotic Concert Friday evening of this week in the 'Down Hall a bumper crowd. It may be one of our own boys who will be helped by the ex- penditure of the money received. 23 cents admits to any part of the Hall, Program will be an interesting one. Help a worthy cause by your presence. DEWETT sold himself at very cheap rate when be listened and heeded the tempter to rebel against Great Britain. His rebellion has died at an ear'y stage of 'heart failure and he is a disgraced man for life. Contrast his position with Botha and it would not be difficult for most people to make a choice. NOTWITHSTANDING the fact that Great Britain has lost several warships and hundreds of brave seamen she is still the proud mistress of the seas and every Nation owes her a great debt in safe- guarding the trade paths of the ocean. When the rival fleets meet there will be a battle royal, BuYt a home, boom the local trade and help the local tradespeople, Every time you spend your coin at an outside point you give the business man in your own community "diff" in the eye. Think how you would like the treatment your- self. Sometimes a fellow who is a great stickler for home trading forgets to set much of an example and thereby gives himself away. Help yourself by buying at home. AN American has a digging machine. that bas been purchased by the people at war, for the purpose of grave excavat- ing on the battlefield. When not busy at this time would be occupied in dig- ging trenches forthe soldiers.. George Edwards, of town, has a patent for a ditching machine that with a• few changes could be fitted out to do such work. By the results of some battles it is not much w onder that something more speedy than a spade is required. WHAT to grow and how to grow it is often a . problem to the farmer who studies to lay out a remunerative pro- gram. A Chatham township tiller of the soil had 1,34o bushels of beans off 46 acres this past season which he sold in Chatham for 132,95o, which was within *5o of the original cost of the property containing 50 acres. The quality of the farming is often a greater asset than the quantity of the land owned. Good cul. tivation pays big dividends and the proof is not far to seek. Ambition to excel' will often help accomplish a large measure of success. Many a farmer keeps bis head as well as his bands and feet busy, MAJOR SAM; Hymns has been catch- ing tally -bo from some of his political friends as well as his enemies but we think he has shown considerable praise- worthy dash in critical situations. If he possessed more of the characteristic "shut mouth" of Lord Kitchener he would escape much of the criticism he falls heir to. Possibly fault finding isa much simpler chore than to step into the breech and do half as well, There are emergencies during war times that cannot be dealt with by some well yeas. oued out course, possibly no similar situation ever existed hence there must be a certain amount of latitude allowed., Some m of the war lords are high steppers without much to show for their business but Major Sam hustles even if he does talk too much, Doter make the program of your en- tertainment if you are interestedin one, too long as merit counts for very little after wearluess on the part of the audi- ence begins, The major number of social gatherings would be infinitely improved if some wise person's little hatchet cut the musical and literary bill of fare in two and reserved the latter half for another night. We have been at entertainments where the closing number MIS not rendered until after midnight. That is au undeniable fact and those who attended went home grumbling at the late hour instead of whistling or laughing over the fine Pro- gram, go seconds is better than 3 hours and multunt in parvo is more to be de- sired than bolting the compass for a long time with half the passengers sick. Shorten your program and please your patrons is the advice of THE Pose', Use Parislari Sage If your hair is getting thin; losing its color, or hilathat matted, life, less and scraggy appearamoe, the trea- son is evident --dandruff and failure to keep the hair roots properly nourish- ed, Parisian Sage applied daily for a week and then occasionally is all that is needed. It removes dandruff' with one application ; almost Immediately stops falling halt' and itching head invigorates the scalp and makes dull, et:rangy hair sort, abundant and radi- ant with life. Equally1 good for men, women or children -every one needs it. A large bottle of this delightful hair tonic can be had from Jas. Fox or any counter for 50 cents. You will surely like Parisian Sage. There is no other "Just as good" -Try it now. MISSIONARY workers in the various denominations in Canada are into the crusade of enthusing and counselling their members along the line of standing by the cause during the critical war period. The men and - women in the foreign fields are dependant on the generosity of the home churches for their financial support and theirs is a specially trying position without being worried over financial c matters. s Ag cud lift by everybody is the solution of the problem It's our work. THE Temperance zone broadens and this time it is the Governor of the Panama canal who makes a demand that pilots, captains and mates must ab- stain from the use of alcoholic beverages as navigating tbe Panama is too fine a job for a boozy man at the helm or the officer giving orders. It would appear from the above that hi ,h efficiency is not likely to be attained by monkeying with the inebriate's cup, This is not some fancy nor the opinion of a crank but a cool, headed business man who is in charge of an important public work that must be properly guarded. John Barleycorn don't get much show where a cool head and a steady hand is wanted. WE notice the Government Inspectors are ofter apple strippers in some sections for false branding and there are wigs on the green. It is aood thingto look g after the interests ot the public and see that one grade of apples is to be found from top to bottom of the barrels but we have a suspicion that officious officials can make it very disagreeable and ex- pensive for a buyer, if they are so dis• posed and yet not make much out of the case. There is a treasure of fair play. that is due the shipper that should not be loft sight of as our belief is that 9 out of every ro men engaged in the business. desire to do the square thing. No ot e has much pity for the dishonest and crooked fellow who kills the market for himself and hurts the trade of the straight dealer as well. DECEMBER FORECASTS A regular storm period having its center 00 November the 3oth, will come to its culminating stages on the 1st, and and 3rd. Moon will be full on the and and at greatest north declination on the 3rd. The center of the Mars period falls on the 4th. The storms of this period will, most likely, be attended by a wave of unusually high tempera- ture for December, as atmospheric tides will flow Northward from equatorial regions. The Mars influence is also de cidedly electrical in its tendency. The mercury period will add its perturbing power at this time, so that, altogether, we may reasonably look for some very marked storms, or other phenomena out of the normal course. The same gen- eral character r f a o weather that may have prevailed in November, will be striking- ly prolonged and emphasize:i at this period ; if it has been wild and wintery, prepare for the same, and worse, at this and other December periods. If it has been open, mild and spring-like, depend upon it, the same cbaracter of weather will, for the most part, prevail in December. Last Winter every indi- cation pointed to rough and stormy con- ditions in December, but with reversed results. This December, the Venus period is absent, hinting at mild and normal weather ; but Mars, earth, mercury and vulcau may spring the op- posite aurprise upon us. Study and watch conditions in Nuvember, and ex pect,we repeat -to pat- e t o encounter through g December the same general conditions, but to greater extremes. Whatever mars incites is, as a rule intensified - often unseasonable and reversed as to sections and localities ; for illustration, frosts and freezing in , California last Winter, with warm, open weather Northward. A reactionary storm period will develop and run its course on and touch - ng the 5111, 6th and 7th, The reason- ble outlook for this period is that rain, urniug to heavy sleet and snow, will p 1 ass from West to East, and that cloudy m ercurial, cold weather will continue or several days after the passage of the torms. Study your barometer closely, n connection with every storm period, A regular storm period is central on he lath, extending from the Toth to the 6th, This is another annual period of maximum magnetic and electric disturb- nce, Earth's North magnetic pole akes its greatest angle with the solar quator, hence a crisis of negative urrents, an inrush of borel, interstellar nergy, and excess of Winter storm and weather from the North polar directions. inter thunder and rain Will be natural n and touching the loth. A reactionary storm period is central on the 17th. iSlb and rgth. If we are to have heavy, boreal storms this month - things best to count on -expect such at this reactionary period. Wild, Winter gales ant rage out upon the Atlantic seas, and answering storms, followed by cold, will sweep over lake, coasts and inland. A regular storm period is coincident with the center of the December solstice period, being central on the 23rd, and reaching from tbe arst to the 26th. This period will bring very low barometer, and on and touching the 23rd and 240 the temperature will rise,. and storms of rain, atteuded by Winter lightning and thunder, will be probable. These storms will taro to sleet and snow about tbe a4th and 25th, bringing change to much colder, with snow in wide areas of the country for Christmas In fact a general snow storm will sweep out to the Northwest and spread far to the East and South by the close of this period, closely followed by high barometer and cold ole.riog weather. A reactionary storm period is central on the 280, 29th end 3osh, On and touching these days, a reaction to warmer, with falling 'barometer, and more storms of rain. turning to snow, will cross the country from West to East. High barometer and change to colder will be in sight from the West as the month goes out, CONSISTENCY To the Editor of THE POST "Consistency thou art a jewel." We have very strict laws regulating the sale of morphine, cocaine, opium and other poisonous drugs and pro- hibiting their use only under special conditions. That is very wise but whylicense and encourage e th sale o alcoholic beverages that o indefinite- ly more harm than all the others put together ? The deaths from drink, in the United States have been estimated to be ten per cent of the total. If we estimate ours at even one half of that it gives us over five thousand deaths every year from drink. Physicians general- ly admit that, that (Imre is much too low but suppose that only five hun- dred or even one hundred lose thele lives through drink, is it not 0iminal to allow this slaughter to go on P Look at the trouble and expense we take over one case of smallpox yet here is something that is a thousand times worse than smallpox allowed to be soldfreely and one man allowed to urge and even force another to par- take of it. Hard tines are ahead of us and yet Iwo millions of dollars are spent every year over the bars of a small city for what does more harm than opium, cocaine, wax and pestilence all put.to- gether. A. A1t2Qost'r, M. B., M. C, P. S. THE BELGIAN REFUGEES AND THE WAR The following letter has been re- ceived by J. S. Purvis, of Ethel locali- ty from a friend in England and has been handed to THE POST for publica- tion :- Emily's letter of Oct. 27th, to hared this morning. Aa I don't wish to delay am answering it at once. You ask about Belgian children, Well we have very few Belgians here or in Liverpool. You would probably see from the papers that German spies are getting into England disguised as Belgian refugees and so get to the , coast town. There is 110 doubt what- ever that all our losses in the North Sea have been through information given by spies stationed on the roast and so 110 aliens are allowed now to 1 be in coast towns. They and the Belgian refugees are kept inland, All the refugees we have are wealthy one who were here before the order mentioned above carne out. Don't he in a hurry about adoption. There will be orphans of British soldiers to be provided for and no doubt your friends could get one of these. An- other drawback La the religious ores, As you will agree the overwhelming majority of Belgians are Roman ' Catholics. I was in Leeds recently and was told that this religious ques- tion was becoming veru acute and was stopping the flora of kindness. I had authentic cases mentioned to me, one case where a young lady, dangll- tee of one of my friends, wished to adopt a child and was it n ptf t Shed by the priest that only on condition the child was brought tip as a Roman Catholic. The lady answered certain- ly not, If I adopt a child I will bring it up in the faith of my church (Wes- leyan). Another case was where a man had taken a Belgian family into his house and was seen by priests and a demand made for money for the church, simply because he was hous- ing the family, Of course the de- mand was refused, I was told of another case where a non-Ootforinist family were housing Belgians (Catho- lic) and who had to tell the priests that unless tbeyceased pestering thein (the non -Conformists) they would re- luctantly have to ask the Belgians to leave. They were riot adverse to the Belgians worshipping in their own faith, in.fact had taker( therm to the door of the church but they world not allow the priests to worry then(, These facts may be of use to you, Of corl'se it is very kind of your friends i to have such generous hearts. Help the Belgians all you can, they need it and we are doing all we can in the way of sewing and help, Now as to the war. Don't get panicky, The Germans wont get to anada. Their arilbaasacior in Amerk a has only been trying to frighten ou and us, It would be a breach of the country on and touching the 14th worse enemy than Glermany, y DONS ealailaSelearearalleswimiscreatraw,Mat OMANg BEST MEOICIE Mrs, Kelly Advises all Women to Take "Fruit-a-Tives" HAOOnsvlr I,E, Ozer., Ann, 26t3 1913, I cut highly recommend 'Fruit-a- ttt c " bee nese they did me an awful lot of good and I cannot speak too hi+.ply abort theta.
