business men, occurred Saturday
morning at,17 o'clock at Mercy hospi-

death was pneumonia, from which
Mr. Omstead had been suffering for
several days, and which developed
following a serious surgical operation.
William Hngh Omstead was born
June 27, 1885, in Woolstock, Iowa,

capacity of bookkeeper. On August
10, 1908, at 'Hartley, Iowa, Mr. Om -
stead was united in marriage to Miss

FINE SERIVOES.- The second Sun-
day of the opening services of Duff's
fine new chureh was "LL feast of fat
things." With splendid congrega-
Mons- the afternoon and evening
services filling the edifice to the
doors -good music lead by the choir
and ably assisted by Misa Genanaell, of
Seaforth, and one of the finest
preachers in the land in the pulpit, in
1110 person of Rev. Dr. Gaudier,
Principal of Knox College, Toronto,
everything appeared to be complete
and was an excellent counterpart to
tbe previous Sabbath and spoke
volumes for the excellent generalship
of the pastor, Rev. R. A. Lundy, who
evidently has 1)0 311)01) word as failure
in his vocabulary. Dr. Gandier's ser -
twins were scholarly, full of en-
couragement and well defined thereby
impressing the optimistic lessons of
the day, "Our Canadian Heritage"
was the morning discourse ; following
it with an extra good one in the after-
noon and the evening theme was
"The opportunities of this age."
Rev. Dr. Gandier's visit on this oc-
casion will live' long in the memory
of those who had the pleasure of hear-
ing him. The offering for the day
amounted to $184.00. Last Sunday
the pastor occupied the pulpit and
during the past week the finishing
touches were being put on the up-to-
date lecture room by Contractor
Hunter. When Bpring comes and
the grounds can the cleared up and
properly arranged' it will not be an
easy matter to find a tidier church
property than Duff's church Walton.

MARRIAGE AND DIVORCE.-- In dis-
cussing this question. on Sunday night
Rev, Dr. Oaten took for his text the
following words "And they twain
shall be one flesh, so then they -are no
more twain but one flesh, what there-
fore God bath joined together let no
man put assunder." Ile pointed out
:hat there was need for education on
the question of marriage and divorce
because the question of the establish-
ment of a Divorce Court for Ontario
had been up for recent discussion and
voting in tbe Toronto Law Society.
That we are pressed hard by the social
conditions of the United States where
at least 8ces000 families are affected by
divorce. a company sufficiently large
to inteurle about two thiids of tbe
immure of tbe Dominion of Canada ;
and thither that much of currerit
literature is saturated with divorce,
with the implication that divorce is not
only ft permissible but necessary way of
escape from unendurable conditions.
'rue statement of Christ that the mar-
riage relation enacts a tie which super -
cedes Nature, making two one and that

which had obtained concerning mar-
riage. citing the fact that the family and
State interests were,
in an age just past,
the only dominantfeature in match-
making. Present day thought was that
the interests of the individual were the
only interests to be entertained. In
this the pendulum had swung too far.
The true basis of marriage lies in the
great social end which is served namely,
the saving of life. Without the at-
tainment of this end tbe race perishes.
There are consequently three parties iu
view in the marriage relation, the man.
the woman and the combined Ilfe to be
and the whole of the marriage relation
must centre, not in the mon and
woman, but in the child. 'rhe home
exists that the coining generation may
be fostertd under proper coeditions.
The happiness of the contracting parties
is therefore but a subordinate factor
and Is not the end of marriage, The
preacher, however, insisted that the
surest way to attain to fullest happiness
and perfection of being Is to lend
all the powers of being to the treating
of ideal surroundings for growing child-
hood. For this Christ expressed His
thought when he took them up in His
arms put His band upon them and
blessed them The kind of love which
fitted this view of marriage was not of
a romantic type such 120 1000 expressed
by Tennyson "She shall set herself to
him like perfect music set to perfect
worths" for that never was and never
can be realized. But rather that real
and practical deeotion which sees its the
other excellencies with possibilities but
not perfection, Divorce for the child-
ren's sake must not be entertained for
it is turning out that the divorce orphan
is supplying more criminals for the
Juvenile Courts of the United States
than ail other classes of society put to-
gether, Incompatibility instead of
being a cause for divorce is the very
element in the marriage relationship
which is intended by Nature to work
for the highest good. The man ueeds
the modifying of the woman's refine-
ment and the woman needs the trans-
forming which comes from the rugged
nobility of the man and iu the ellen
necessary fot such adjustments the t

divorce system is found in the right
