Chief 13011 may be asked to give a test of the protection in this district to settle all doubt, My Experience With Tile Drains The cost per acre of laying the drains varies according to the situa- tion of the laud to be drained. On low flat land formerly a black ash swamofor u1• which i first procured et P good outlet 1 placed drains 100 feet apart, and as they were 52 'rods long, could only get about L inches fall per 100 feet, starting at three feet four inches and coming up to 2 feet. These drains cost for labor, 18 cents and for tile, 18 cents—total, 86 cents a rod, not counting hauling and board of men, costing about $10 an acre, besides drawing tile. On higher ground surrounding this swamp I put drains 50 feet apart, and an average of two and a half feet deep at about the same cost per rod. To the above in ray case should be added the cost of the main drain, which, being of large tile, graduated from four inches to .12 inches at out- let, would probably be two-thirds of the branch drains. The land I have drained will, all told, average $10 an acre. QUICK RETURNS I have been fully repaid for the cost of tiling by the increased crops of one year in some fields, and at furthest three years. Except in a gravelly or sandy sub- soil I consider all our land here bene- fitted by drainage. Drained land stands dry weather much better than undl•ained. For large areae of fiat, swampy land free from springs, open drains to carry off surface water do very well, and do not cost very much an acre, as they can be ' made along Seaforth I. G.
