The Brussels Post, 1912-3-21, Page 7ion Hints BETWEEN SEASONS, Every year, about this time of the r season, 'a well-known Paris dress- maker launehes a model •with the puffed effect that used to be known AS paniera. Each time he fails in the attempt to make this gown a success, writes a Paris correspon- dent. This year again a most up- to-date form of pallier has made its appearance, yet with as small a chance of pleasing the Parisienne of 1912 as its predecessors. We have arrived at that disagree- able period of the year character- istically denominated la morto sat. son. There is nothing novel tto be seen anywhere, with the exception of a few precocious chapeaux that I1 during the "below zero" days were yl not looked upon with much favor other than by those going South immediately, although unpleasant weather prevails even in that usu- ally highly favored part of France. Tho blue waters of the Mediterran- ean are muddy and cloudy; the trees and flowers are dismally drip- ping, umbrellas also, while those able-bodied creatures intent on out- door. exercise sit twirling their thumbs in discontent, with entr'ac- tes of anathema hurled at that arch- fiend Jupiter Pluvius. The conical shape in straw pre- dominates among first spring mod- els. It recalls the quaint hats worn by the Japanese men of the lower classes. But, unlike the eastern headgear, the Paris model shades without covering the face. This coming shape will necessarily al - r the present style of dressing the hair. Certain milliners even insist on their clients discarding the flat coiffure and adopting once more small bunches of curls. The head must not disappear beneath this new conical bat, but needs to in- .. • crease in width in order to tilt the straw shape at the correct angle. • PARIS NOTES. Pongees are by no means as prom- inent as they were. Parasols with handles, tips, and rings of crystal are shown. Blue and tan have the load among the early spring tailored suits. For automobile coats, rough ef- fects are particularly desirable. Tho short coat of lace has return- ., ed at the bidding of fashion. Two small roses made of beads adorn a child's hat. Belts are frequently seen on au- tomobile coats, and belt sugges- tions are oonsiderocl smart, • The small flat plaited jabots have enjoyed a high degree of favor, the larger effects and fluffy shadow la- ces being reserved for spring. 11. INVADED BANK OF ENGLAND. Man Found His Way Into the Rich- est Room in the World, The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street, the Bank of England, that staid and conservative bulwark of British finance, has experienced more than one startling mischance. Of these, perhaps the most unex= petted was that connected with a communication it has received from an unknown source, a communica- tion as vivid as any in the most sen- sational detective story. This letter, which caused the board of directors to sit up and take notice, wti;e ecouched in these extra- ordinary tams: "No doubt you think you are all safe and that your bank is safe; but I know better. I have been inside your bank during the last two nights, and you knew nothing of my vierts. As I am not a thief, and wish to warn you of your danger, I invite you to meet me in the great square room at twelve bo-nigiht. I shall then explain all to you. Let only two of you come, and say noth- ing to anyone else." The next night'the square room, "the richest compartment an the world," as it has been palled, wan guarded; but northing happened. Then came the next phase of the mystery. A heavy chest of securi- ties, taken.• from the strong room, arrived ait`•fhe bank with a letter complaining that the directors had notified the police, and that the writer had not therefore appeared, according to his promise. Now, he continued, to prove that he was not eq thief, he sent with his letter a chest'af papers that he had taken from the bank. If a few men would assemble without the police in the strong roam; the writer would join them at midnight. After solemn deliberation the di- rectors decided to do as they were told, The'.assembled in the square room. .At midnight there came a ery from behind the stone walls, "Put out the lights l" The direc- tors dbeyed. Then a man with a dark lantern entered. His story was soon told. He gained a living by searching the sewers etnight, and through a sewer opening he had found Me way into tho richest room in the world. , • The tramp.woi'rieerover his *did, wool, rho millionaire'over his last. i•' A MOTHER'S DUTY TO HER DAUGHTER Her Health Must Be Carefully Guarded as She Comes to Womanhood. Every mother who cane to mind her own girlhood 'knows how ur- gently her daughter is likely to need help and strength during the years between early school days and womanhood. Then it is that growing girls droop, become fra- gile, bloodless and nervous. Nature is calling for more nourishment than the blood can supply, and signs of distress are plainly evident in dull eyes, pallid cheeks, weak and aching backs a languid step, fits of depression, nervousness and a dis- like for proper food. These signs mean anaemia—that is bloodless- ness, The watchful mother takes prompt steps to give her girl the new, rich blood her weak system is thirsting for by giving her Dr. Wil- liams' Pink Pills, because so many thousands of feeble, anaemic, un- happy girls have been transformed into robust women through the rich red blood these pills actually make. No other medicine has ever succeeded like them, and thousands of mothers have proved their worth. The case of Miss Marguerite Bois- clair, St. Jerome, Que., proves th e truth of these statements. Miss Boisclair is sixteen year's of age, and says that since the age of thir- teen er fourteen she had been af- flicted with extreme weakness, and seemed to be going into a decline. The least effort left her weak and breathless, so that she was unable to do any household work. She had no appetite, suffered from ter- rible headaches, dizziness and some- times fainting spells. She was un- der medical treatment, but made absolutely no improvement, in fact seemed to be steadily growing weaker. When her case seemed most hopeless a lady friend advised the use of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. After taking a few boxes she began to gain new strength, and after the continued use of the pills for about two months she was again as well and strong as ever she had been, and has since enjoyed the best of health. Sold by all dealers in medicine or by mail at 50 cents a box, or six boxes for $2.50, from The Dr. Wil- liams' Medicine Co., Brookville, Ont. SELF-SACRIFICE. Gillet—"I have an awful cold." Percy—"What will you take for it?" Gillet—"Not one cent, old man. I'll give it to you." Faultless in Preparation.—Unlike any other stomach regulator, Par - melee's Vegetable Pills are the re- sult of long study of vegetable com- pounds calculated to stimulate the stomachic functions and maintain them at the normal condition. Years of use have proved their faultless character and established their ex- cellent reputation. And this repu- tation they have maintained for years and will continue to main- tain, for these pills must always stand at the head of the list of standard preparations. SQUARING THE CIRCLE. Jiggs—"I tell you; that new landlord of mine is a pretty square fellow." Biggs—"So's mine ; but he's al- ways around on rent day." After ono of his performances in the States recently his audience kept clamoring for a speech and refused to be satisfied Mr. Philip Sousa. with the usual bow. Finally, Sousa stepped to the front of the platform and, raising his hand, said impres- sively, "Ladies and gentlemen, can you all hear me?" There was the usual, "Yes." "Then I wish you replied the conduc- tor, good -night," tor, and promptly walked off the stage. RECKLESS. The chief of the clan of McIntosh once had a dispute with a cabby over the fare. "Do yon know who I am?" the Highlander asked angrily. "I am the McIntosh." "I don't care if you are an um- brella," retorted the cabby, "I'll have my rights." AN EXCELLENT MEBICINE FOR ALL LITTLE ONES Mrs. Civila Lamarre, Malvina, Que., writes: "I have found Baby's Own Tablets an excellent medicine and would not use any other for my little one. I think all mothers should keep the tablets in the house." Thousands of other mo- thers have the same praise for the tablets. They are absolutely safe —being guaranteed by a govern- ment analyst to contain no opiate or other harmful drug. They break up colds, expel worms, cure constipation and indigestion, in fact they are good for all the minor ills of little ones. The tablets are sold by medicine dealers or by mail at 25 cents a box from The Dr. Wil- liams' medicine Co., Brockville, Ont. SIMPLE. The Kaiser is the possessor of nearly ninety estates, the biggest of which has an area of a quarter of a million acres. But this is not all. Emperor William holds the record as the owner of castles, which now number close on sixty. In Potsdam e;lono he possesses thirteen, while one built for his Majesty at Posen, in Prussia, took over five years to erect, and cost $1,250,000. Another castle, in Alsace, which had fallen into ruin, he had restored at a cost of $300,000. But, not content with that, last year he bought a villa in Cor?u, built for the late Empress of Austria. The Raiser seldom re- sides in his castles; they are merely kept up for political reasons. IMPOSSIBLE. "You'd better fumigate these bills before you go home. They may be covered with microbes," said the druggist one Saturday ev- ening as he handed a few, faded, worn, and soiled silver certificates to his clerk. An .enterprising exchange has collected the following oddities in print: A butcher's sign out west reads as follows : "John Jacobs kills pigs like, his father. A tailor had a bill in hie window to the fallowing effect: "Wanted— several thin coat makers." This is a fine chance for spare tailors, An advertisement in a Boston newspaper appeared as follows "Wanted, a young man in the dry goods trade; to be partly outdoors and partly behind the counter." The following extract from a med- ical advertisement is perhaps cor- rect: "Consumptives, cough while you can, for after you have taken one bort', of my mixture you can't." To the correspondent who in- quires whether there has been any sudden drop in dry goods this week a commercial writer says : "We have noticed but one, She said, when we picked her up, that people who ate grapes ought not to throw their ekins on the sidewalks." A farmer wrote as follows to a distinguished scientific agricultur- ist, to whom he felt under obliga- tions for introducing et variety of swine: "Respected Sir: I went yesterday to the cattle show. I found several pigs of your species. There was a great varietyof ho s and I was astonished at ot seeing you there." +L SALT RHEUM FOR 6 YEARS, Zam-Bnk Has Cur'ell Him. For •over six years Mr. William H. Birt, of Pisqutd, P.E.I., suffered from salt rheum. He says: "The disease attacked my arms and hands, and the fore -finger of my right hand was the worst. "I was engaged as a blacksmith by the Bruce Stewart Go., of Char- lottetown, and sometimes every stroke of the hammer would cause the finger to bleed freely. I tried various ointments and salves, and. then went to several doctors in and around Oharlottetown. "One medical man, after treating me for soma time said he did not think I could ever be cured. Trying one thing and another I spent over $50.00; and all in vain. "I saw an account of some of the great cures which Zam-Buk has worked and decided to try it, The first box did me a lot of good, and the finger showed traces of healing, so I kept up the Zam-Buk treat- ment, and a few boxes worked a cure."
