Some argue that the re luetance displayed by ladies already pos sassed of a Municipal vote to use the same proves that the franchise Is not valued as highly as the supporters of the movement appear t to think. We believe it would be a safe and a sane piece of legislation that would give women the ballot. If the non-use is an argument against it what about the hundreds of mea who dodge polling their votes ? \\`tiAT ever else the Oatario Legisla- ture fall to do the Furward Policv to- ward New Ontario should be pressed with vigor. Hon. Mr. Hearst has the opportunity of his life to make his port- folio stand for something aggressive by formulating a program that will claim the support of not only the M. P. P 's and Northern Ontario but will appeal as well to the people of the older sectious of the Province, many of whom believe it is time for the Government to wake up on the eolonizetiou question. THE Pos'r will back Heron County officiary against that of any other in the Province with the expectation of Huron winning. There is not a blank in the whole number whether the ap pointees of the Government or the County Council. Anybody who has had business connections with them, perhaps barring Judges Doyle and Holt and Sheriff Reynolds. whose duties faithfully performed do not always meet with favor by the parties interested, can vouch for the correctness of this note. Some say that even Jailer Griffin's boarders part from him with a tear in their eye and a gulp in their throat. WHAT would Brussels business people think of making the Monthly Horse Fair dated for February, March and April special Bargain days and announce them as such ? ' When weather condi• tions are favorable the attendance is usually large and in marking those days by well planned arrangement of stocks and prices made to draw the trade the results tnight be welt worth the effort, Dates of coming Fairs will be Thursday, February 1st, Thursday, February 29th and Thursday, April 4th., so that there is no time to lose if the plan comes into effect for February 1st. The coming of Spring always booms the market for horses and also opens up the season for purchasing goods for Spring and Summer use or taking advan'age of Bargain sales in heavier goods, I•r is a trifle comical to visit the nkat• ing rink and watch the manoeuvres of the devotees of the shining steel. All ages are represented front the grand- fathers and grandmothers to those of very tender years, some hardly out of the cradle. 'There are all sizes of people, ranging from upwards of 6 feet to the short, squatty individual. Some of them are of the bean pole variety while others sit down like a thousand of brick, even without being asked to do so; There is the artist who glides with a great sweep, cuts the figure 8 or does the grapvine with neatness ; next comes the greennornwho has to have some- body "lug" them along, with the ac cent on the lug ; then there is the "tom. Hoy," skater, male or female, Who either takes the whole ice or charges into you like a thunderbolt and: cuts the corners, with a recklessness that endangers the limbs of the patrons to say nothing of tbeir own ; Ibe "scary" lady who is fearful of falling ; the man who has not. had skates on for 20 yeas and only stops because be cant go through the wall after striking a gait on the stretch- es; and last but not least the skater who performs gymnastiee not shown in any book of physical culture and winds up by vowing that "This is the last time I will be seem making a fool of myself for many a day " There is zest and. good full in skating, in moderation, but like [navy another good thing should not be petfnitted to eueroaell On other more THE fJFECThVE LAXATIVE 'ratites pee and ie eaten Like sandy elf our experience in the handling of dregs and medicines, we believe we have never, had experiooce with any Remedy Chat gave such great eatis- factiou to our customers es do Rex - all Orderlies. So frequent are these occurrences i cern re ccs becom n 4 g that a well cleaned agitation is on the way to put a stop to this toll of humans ty. Gates, wa tchmen, electric bells, elevated tracks or subways are among the proposals which will mean heavy expense to the railroads but nothtug compared to the value of a life. Rail- way Boards and Parliaments will be im- portuned to remedy what has become too common to be excused or passed over with a warning. Iucreased travel on both roadway and railway increases the necessity of arousing the parties most interested, They may be a trifle deaf to the call and slow to acre le but protection must be afforded and if nee essary demanded Do you desire to see Brussels grow ? If so are you willing to help? Some people are long in 'alk and good.ad vice but short in backing up what has been said by the collateral. Our reason for such an introduction just now springs from a letter received by A C Baeker, who recently purchased the Salt Works, in town, from W. C. Stret• ton, an experienced driller of oil, gas and salt wells in Ohio, who also owns 200 acres of land in this vicinity He suggests that a local Company be form - ed and a new well drilled (es the one at the block is blocked at present by the piping) with the object of seeking for either gas or oil rather than salt. Mr Stretton is of opinion any of the three may be secured and is willing to join hands with us is making the test. No one will doubt the advantage of oil or gas in paying quantities and we know by past experience that no better salt can be found in the country than that manufactured at Bruesels. The block here went into disuse not on account of shortage in quantity or quality but be- cause of trade uombines and a freight tariff counting against this station. That is the proposition before the people of this commtmity and its progression will depend on the sympathetic manner in which it is received and financed. A geological study will be made of the strata -understood to exist and compared with that discovered where successful drilling has been unaertaken. 1912 should mark a great forward stride in Bu nssels and what is needed is optimism unity and sufficent cash to take the nec- eesary step s to wisely and well make things go. When evert body lifts there is little burden carried by the individual. What do you think shoal it ? OUR WINNIPEG LETTER Suet as each year iu the past has eclipsed those that went before, 91 e e, 1 1 has Made records in figures oP growth and development along all lues of agriculture, industry and trade in eViuuipeg and Western Otulada. City a tad country both have shared equally in the growth that bas made such very subattutlal progress. The farmers of Western Canada have never had to bring Iheiecrops through a year of more ill-assorted tether y weather experiences than during the past twelve months, but in spite of (hese ill-favored conditions the farms of Western Canada have produced this year by far the largest crops in the country's biseitry. Manitoba alone has yielded 61,058.786 bushels of wheat 73,786,683 bushels of aatle and 29,000,- 000 bushels of barley, while the yield for the three pt evinces including Saskatchewan atiii Alberta is comput- ed, to be not lees than 177,000,000 bush. els of wheat, 182,000,000 In ahele of nate, 84,000,000 bush is of bat it y stud 9,000,000 bushels of flax. The purchas- ing power iu money when the 1911 crop is all marketed, gives the'enor- mous cash value to the country of approximately $260,000,000. With an increase in 1911 of $217,000,- 000 in Winnipeg Bank clearings it placesY of this cit at the o all n t. centres nn theoubn 0 eat in in- creased p er t p ceu age of clearings over 1910. The total bank clearings for the year 1911 amounting to $1,170,000,000, has placed Winnipeg for the first time in the billion dollar class of cities. The city of Winnipeg has continued to receive its share of Canada's Indus- trial growth and in this connection Provincial returns show that seventy- oue charters for purely industrial companies have been issued with a combined authorized capital of $7695,- 000, Winnipeg being named ars the heatiquart-as of each company regia- tered. Not only have new companies located but elder industrial Heine have found it necessary to extend their working capital to take care of the growing trade, nineteen firms have increased their capital from $2,380,000 w $6,360,000 during the year. The close of the year 1911 gives Witinipeg267 manufacturing establish- ments operating in the city with in- vested capital of 886,000,000,.enaploy- iug over 15,000 hands, with a monthly pay roll amounting to three•quartet s of 'e trillion dollars. The annual, out- put of Winnipeg industries in 1911 is estimated at $40,000.000 which in view of the government census in 1900 showing the output to be 518,083,000, i t very gratifying. To keep pace with this development, the city of Winnipeg has expended $1,000,000 un street improvements alone during the past year, the exten- sions made having covered the sewers, ten and a half miles of asphalt pave- ment and sixteen miles of sidewalks. The most notable industrial event of the year has been the completion of Winnipeg's big municipal power plant which is now serving the city with electric current. The adoption of a three cent rate for 'domestic lighting withequally low prices for electric power for manufacturing is perhaps e' -greatest inducement Winnipeg as yet made towards further indtts trial development. Winnipeg's new petmttnetit Expos' Lion building emoted by the \\tiitnipey Development Bureau occupying frontage of 5011 feet on Main and Water streets in the centre of the city is an advanced step towards the developtitent 1,1' local inslitutt.iotis The building hush by Winnipeg Inlri from ntrtlkrlal 4i.,>i' Whtnipeg's I'aetnrit a and fhranc&'d Wintlipl'g'ut Aulti:c spirited citizens has t u Z 9a III g felewant it adequate space fur Bur- eau i u u 9 P an c mei a central, o f e offices I ce a , ep n Inlical and effective means for publicity and the advancouteut of home industry. There has been a decided growth in Winnipeg's population shaping the last year. The report of the city Assessment Commissioners ehowa that as many as $21,000 people have been added and that the assessment value of properl;v has advanced from $157,608,220 in 1910 to 5172,677,250 for 1911. Another gratifying feature is the rapid development of aeticultural lands in the three prairie provinces. This iinttligration movement into Canada, (which means largely, West- ern Canada,) bas advanced very rapid ly in past, 5 years. In 1907, 262,460 persons came in from all sources. J'he next year 146,908 came, in 1909, 208,784 immigrants, arrived and 1910 brought 311,094 and in 1011 the figgnees show 350,420 settlers all of whom have come with the avowed intention of taking up their permanent residences with us. In course of the building up of the population of the West there has been a most rapid development in the build- ing Grades, as much as $70,000,000 going into new building in the ten chief cities West of the Great Lakes during 1011. During 1911,1596i] miles of new rail- way a ) was ct to feted in Western i Y P eui Cal a- da, 203 new towns were started in the three prairie provinces ; 41 being estttblislted on the C. P. R. system, 130 on thee). N. R. Western system and 32 thriving towns on Lite. Grand Trunk:Pacific railway. The building of these railway towns naturally causes a demand for Western banking facilities and in this connection 67 new branch banks have been added to the 647 institutions t hitt were operat- ing at the close of 1910. Not•withstandiug the unfav- orable crop season the wholesale and retail business in all lines has been very satisfactory and it is safe to say that the annual turn over bus been at least 25 per cent above the yew 1910. Interest in the Imperial Home Re- union Association has during 1911 be- come national. This new and far- reaching immigration plan has taken root East and West. Since its birth in Winnipeg in the closing weeks of `1910 as many as 20 Canadian cities have organized likeassociatione which are now assisting worthy men to bring their' families to Canada from Great. Britain. The outlook for general business for the season of 1912 is bright; not only in Winnipeg but in the whole of the four Western 'Provinces. With the combined forces of such far teachiu advertising campaigns as are outlined by the Dominion Government, the big railway-col'poratinus,\'the Provin- cial Governments, cities, towns and districts all working for population, industry and capital, it is sure to result in a great influx of population and capital. Agriculture and industry will move forward together, in 1912. A keener interest is abroad to develop home industry tlu'unghnut the land and with this patients.:spirit abroad to buy U.tuadial geode the product of Canadian labor and resources \Vest - ern Canada will receive Its rigbtful •shave in general development for 1912, Manitoba, has awakened to the stn- - porttwoe of a vigorous campaign for people. The wealth of Western Canada's partially developed natural resources is yet untold. With only 10 per cent of the vast stretches of fertile laud un- der' crop, with lumber and mineral resonrces merely suface touched, with millions of acres of free land and other millions of acres of cheap land, Western Canada is bound to have fleet place among the countries of the world as a place in which people may come and settle and make for them- selves a home and business equal to their' ability, capacity and capital in- vested.
