THERE was a fire scare last Saturday
afternoon, the call coming from the
home of Wm, McQuarrie. Cause of
trouble was that in burning a quantity
of dry leaves the fire was endangering
the house. The danger was sdbn over -
past. Fire bell was rung but engine
was not taken out. At this season of
the year it is well to exercise more than
ordinary caution in starling fires,

Next Sabbath morning Rev. Dr. John
Ross, Toronto, will occupy the pulpit of
Melville church, the occasion being
the 45tb anniversary of his induction in-
to the pastorate of this congregation.
Last Sabbath morning in Melville
Church, the pastor spoke on "Tbe
Victor's Crown," the text being Rev.
9; 11 "Hold that fast which thou bast
that no mao take thy crown," Principle
embodied in the text is that Purity in
public and private life brings victory.
At tbe evening service the pastor took
as bis text, Luke 24: 25, "Behold I have
told you before," and spoke on the sub-,
jest 'Facing the crisis of war." Re-
sults of war were vividly portrayed and
young and old warned that only by the
teaching of the principles of JesusChrist
in the home could war be avoided.
