Stop Potato Gifts for School Exhibits The Ontario Department of Agri- culture has given notice that the dis- tribution of potatoes to school chil- dren will be • discontinued. There will, however, be classes at the school fall fairs, the exhibits to come from the home gardens. The reason for this attitude on the part of the De- partment is expense and the difficulty experienced in handling the distribu- tion. Engaged, at St. Marys. Alex. Ross, of Listowel, who has been engaged with the Hydro -Elec- tric Power Commission near Brun- eels, has accepted a position with the commission near St. Marys and is leaving at once to commence his duties there. Dolores Costello Superb as Gay "College Widow" boleros Costello comes to the Grand Theatre of Friday Aug. 31st for a 2 day run in "The College Widow" the brilliant Wartier Bros, revival of George Ade's tremendous s'cage flit of several years ago. Miss Costello is cast as the daughter of a college president, who is about to lose his job because of his inability to in- terest athletes in coning to the in- stitution. A promised gift is also to be forfeited for the sante reason The pretty and wilful lady decides to make things move, and by her per- sonal charm wins a football team which sweeps her father's college to victory and his job to security. Each man in the team thinks he is the girl's favori'ce and when her dpulicity is discovered high jinks follow. "The College Widow" is without doubt the most thoroughly delightful college play ever written and the film is even better than the stage version, In the cast are William Collier, Jr„ Anders Randolf, _Douglas Gerrard, Robert Ryan, Charles Hill Mailes, Sumner Getchel, Big Boy Williams, Grace Gordon and Jess Hibbs, Archie L. Mayo directed. Another Great Mother Role for Louise Dresser. "White Flannels" the Warner pro- duction which comes to the Grand Theatre on Friday of this week has another great mother role for Louise Dresser, who plays poor Ma Broska, the wife of a Polish miner. hla Broska has seen young college men at the home of, the mine -operators where she goes to do day's work. Their natty clothes, their un'hardened hands, their careless jaunty ways, even their speech so different from that she has been used to hear, fells her with the determination to send her son to college whether he will or not. - Frank Broska, played by Jan- son Robards, is a boy who likes his job. He loves a village girl, and has aepal, a miner, too, rough -and -read,,+ as himself but Ma wills that all this be changed. She learns when almost 'coo late, that education is not neces- sary of schools and that it takes more than what she calls "white flannels" to make a gentleman. "Vfhite Flan- nels" should be seen by all parents, but especially by those whose danger is the unselfishness which is so apt to breed its opposite in the children, for whom these same parents would of- ten be willing to offer their lives.
