Water Wheel
Generates Power
.0n McKillop Farm
Maximum of Six Horsepower Is
Generated On Property of Gordon
McGavin; Cement Darn Replaced
Original One Made of Dirt and
Mud; Water of Silver Creek is
CU! ;zed.
Three years ago Gordon McGavin,
32 -year-old MoKiliop 'farmer, dee
aided he wanted electricity on his
farm,, and because there is no hydro
line along the 12th line the took
the only course that was. open. He
started to generate his own power
from Silver Creek, a small stream
that runs' through the 200 -acre Prop-
erty.
Today the MoGavin farm, eight
miles nee h of Seaforth, is the only
one in Huron County generating its
own power. When opened full
he turbine will generate six horse-
power, but usually the wheel is on-
ly half opened to generate about
one and a half horsepower sufficient
to keep anything on the farm go.
ing. Power is smrpplied for lighting
the home and buildings and for op-
erating a seed -cleaning machine, a
deep well pump, a hot water pres.
sure pump, a radio and. numerous
electrical appliances.
Gordon's mother, Mrs, John Mc.
Gavin, who passed: away seven
years. ago, read an article In a
mechenio's magazine 15 years ago,
erprlaining haw water power might
be utilized to generate electricity
on the farm, but it was not until
three years, ago that Gordon de-
cided to see what he could do. To
begin wth, he built a dan3 of mud
and dirt, reineo:reed with boards,
and on an aid binder wheel he at-
tached about thirty soldered carps,
Strangely enough, the power wheel
worked exactly as' the magazine
artt'cle 15 years ago said it would
Lt generated about one horsepower.
Built Cement Dam
"The old water wheel is not
much good in the event of Spring
floods," Mr, MlcGavin explained:
"Every foot the water rises on the
wheel takes a foot off the head of
the dam until, when it .reaches the
eentre of the wheel you have no
power. Later the same year that
the mud dam lva6' built we had, a
chance to buy a lturbine wheel
frons an old mill at Beimore. We
built a cement dam then behind
the original mud dam and it can
be raised six feet to generate six
horsepower when the wheel is open.
ed full. Usually, bowever, we keep
the turbine only half opened to
generate about one and a half
horsepower, which Is plenty to
keep everything going."
The transmission from an old
model T Ford is used to drive the
generator and the generator is
made from an old Delco idgine
with the connecting rod taken out
and a Pulley put on,
