ONTARIO SEED GRAIN wimwoir WEDNESDAY, SDAY, •TAN, 201b, 1938 1-I uron Treasurer Gives Statement of Expenditures After a careful survey of the seed situation fo rtbe spring of 113;8. the Department Hails that there are suf- ficient oats ami barley in the prov- ince to look after the seed re,iu're- ments. This is depenasut on every farmer taking immediate steps to have the best 4f his grain cleaned and set aside for his seed. Many appear to think that because Melt* grain this year is off color and a rLittle under standard in weight that it will not make suitable seed, hut tests already made show that when tbis off -colored and underweight grain has heed thoroughly cleaned up to a 50 per cent cut in home in- stances, good seed was secured germinated as high as 90 per cent. Rate Would Not Include Cost of Secondary Education in County l COMMITTEES NAMED Goderlch, Jan, 20.—An estimated •• rate of 4 Mills plus the cost of sec0131w education was atlnounced Yesterday by County Tfoaserer A. le. Erskine at Wednesday session of Hutson County Council when be swntnuttted a stlttement of the esti., mates of receipts and expenditures fox 1933, which was referred to the Finance Committee. The tate as estimated is based on the following assessment, Gem- eral account 1,8 mills, County high- ways 1.9 mils, Provincial highways 3 mills, Mr. Erskine said he left reserve in the general fund for unexpected expenditure, School costs apart from secondary schools •sed ad- vanced during the past year and may advance again next year. The other estimates are based On rile average for .th'.' past three years, except where accounts show a gradual increase from year to year. The County Hume estimate has been set at 56,4300. During the past two years 110 '.cuey has bec.t spent on the halms true to the col fictions from estates 111150h the trea1urer warned could let be exp 'd to continue. By following out some such policy there will be no great shortage or seed next spring. Many farmer's have a fanning mill of some descrip- tion, which with a little repair and an extra screen or two, will clean grains. The (correct screen, of course, are important, and should any farmer bo sr, doubt, the Depart- ment will be glad to furnish this in- formation on request. Where farmer's live within driving and trucking distance of power cleaning plants tbat have scourers and cant er disc'machines, it will Pay them to have their cleaning done at one of these planta What is most important is that the farmers start now so thac the cleaning and germinating can be done properly, and not leave it until a spring rush developes.
