John Smith, baggagaman at the G. T.
station here, met with a severe accident.
He was assisting as brakeman on the
train and fell from the top of the car to
the track, breaking one of his ribs and
otherwise injuring him.
On Wednesday of last week Dr. Mac-
donald, assisted by Dr. Gunn, of Clinton,
and Drs. Tamlyn, Towler and Meldrum.

Miss L. O'Connor and W. H. Willie, of
Brussels, and little Lillie Cooper, who
sang two songs very sweetly. Mr. Mc-
Leod, of McKillop, gave a line recitation,
and Messrs. Tonga and Laidlaw, of Drybh,
gave a fow violin selections. The songs,
choruses and recitations by the home
talent MVO well carried out. Rev. W.
Torrance presided as chairman ;and per.

Mrs. W. Doig, of Gorria, sister of Mrs.
H. F. McAllister, of this village, who has
been in the hospital at Toronto, was

now lies in a precarious condition. The
friends, through the medium of your

port of the treasurer we learn that the
balance now on hand is 8308.62, which
will probably be reduced to about 956 by
the end of the financial year, May, 1st,
1890. The Secretary's report shows the
institute to be in a flourishing condition.
From it we learn that the number of
books in the library is 3498 which num.
ber will be increased bo over 3700 when
the new books are purehaaed. The num-
ber of members up to this time is 341,
against 270 at the corresponding time
last year, an increase of 71.

A very delightful time was spent by
the young people of S. S. No. 8 and
neighborhood on Monday evening, 2nd
inst., when an entertainment under the
auspices of tho Literary and Debating
Society was given, ending with a debate,
in whioh it seemed to be proven to the

life is preferable to oonntry life.
