THE Supreme Court has given the Manitoba school legislation the shunt until next October, REPORTa from Manitoba show the crops to be in the most promising condi- tion, the acreage under crop being '?01,- 803 aores in excess of that cultivated last year. Should the crop be successful Manitoba will mark a year of phenomen- al prosperity. Wotan it not be a good idea to have the water from the beautiful spring, near the flax mill, condo cted to the tor• nor of King and Turnberry streets and have a small drinking fountain arranged ? We believe it world be a very popular move. SEvsiAL Quebec journals give currency to a rumor that the Hon. Attorney -Gen- eral Mowat will oontest Kingston for the Commons in the Liberal interest, and that Hon. A. S. Hardy will become Pre- mier of Ontario. While this is nob very likely at present, circumstances might arise which would bring both events within the probabilities. THERE is some talk of establishing a chair of homoeopathic medicine in the Toronto University. 000 patients were treated during the past year in Toronto Homoeopathic hospital. We believe this line of medical science will attain to great prominencein Canada. People are drugged too much. Pure water taken internally as well as externally is a panacea for more ilis than it gets credit for. Tne McGreevy investigation shows that Larkin, Connolly & Co. paid large sums to Mr. McGreevy for election and other expenses, in return !or which they were awarded oontraots for Government work at high figures. These facts were sworn to by a ho°k•keeper of the firm, and the testimony will doubtless result in Mr. McGreevy's retirement from pub. sic life in much worse shape than Ur.. R kert retired. The investigation is letting considerable light in on campaign methods in Quebec, where corruption seems the rule. Fns temperance people of Halton are decidedly aggressive. The great battles they fought, the victories they won, and the defeat they sustained—are these not all written in the chronicles of the de- funct Scott Act ? Still they are not sat- isfied and now we find them organizing and "massing their forces" along the line of national prohibition. And it is a fact suggestive of the dominaney of'their principles, that, in the whole County of Helton there is but one newspaper op• posed to the modes operanda of the tem- perance element. Tex following resolution was passed at the General Assembly of the Presbyter- ian church at Kingston last week :—That this Assembly reaffirm the opinion of past Assemblies regarding the nature of the general liquor traffic and its evil effects on individual, family and social life, and the necessity of the faithful preaching of the Gospel to effectually Overcome these evils and build up a God- ly, temperate and prosperous flatten ; that it asserts its conviction that, in the matter of legislation, nothing short of prohibition, rigidly enforoed by the proper authorities, should ever be accept- ed as final or satisfactory, and that it is now the duty of the Dominion Parlia- ment to enact nth a law. Mann the old tariff the duty on raw sugar was almost equivalent to 2 cents per ib, This hoe been wiped out. The old duty on refined auger was 1} cents per lb„ and 86 per cent. ad valorem this has now been reduced to 8.10 cents per lb. In order to encourage the culti- vation of beet sugar, a 5 per dent. bounty has been placed on beet sugar iniporta• tions : hitherto they were admitted free, There has been a considerable increase in tobacco duties. Out tobacco has been increased to 46 cents per Ib. and 1274 dents ad valorem, snuff and other manufaotnr• ed tobacco have been inoroased five °ante per pound. Ole, beer and porter in easke have been increased five oeuts per imper. ial gallon and in bottles three create per gallon. There are also large increases in spirits and strong waters of all kinds. The duty on salt has been reduced one. half, owing to the fact that combines have fattened as the result of the ekcee• sive taxation. If the sugar refiners are willing to go out of the monopoly bueinese We ratty be considerably bettor. THE BRUSSELS POST Hexon 001111ty, Pertll (:cushy. Crops look well generally in Huron. St. Mary's base ball team defeated the London Stars on Thursday by the fol- lowing score :--St. Mary's, 6, 8, 3 ; Lon- don, 0, 1, 7, Batteries—St. Nary's, Ford ours Eaorott; London, Collins and Quinn. F. Smith. of Stratford, had the other day a strange freak in Lite fowl line. It was a ohfoken with four legs and four wings—all the otherr parts of the Body being natural. It was hatched from a Leghorn egg and died in extricating itself from the shell. The St. Mary's new town bell has sr - rived and been' "hung" in the tower erect. ed for the old one, The bell proper weighs 1264 abs. and the yoke, oarriage, wheel, c0o., make up about 700 more. The Dost will be In the neighborhood of $460, of which over $00 is duty. The bell stands over 3 feet high and is over 4 feet across the mouth. An amusing incident occurred the other afternoon in the vicinity of Vio• toric Lake, Stratford. A young man went there to give a valuable young dog a hall and naturally thinking it could • swim threw it into the wabor. Unfortt• nately it could nob and bad to struggle to keep above the water. The young man's only alternative was to undress and go in after the canine which he did and brought it out more dead than alive. Tenders will be asked by the Standard Oil & Gas Co., of Stretford, for the bor- ing of five wells at pluses hereafter to be decided on, and each well will bo bored to a depth of 2.500 feet if oouasion de- mands it, but no further. The location of the wells will probably be left in the hands of Eugene Coate, a geologist of wide experience in such matters, and who has bad exceptionally good fortune in locating paying wells in many parte of the country. A farther and a County Jnetice of the Peace who ought to know better, tied his horse to a post on Ontario street, Strat- ford, all day. The beast had nothing to eat or drink and from appearance was suffering from exhaustion. Those who had watched the poor brute ebandin g all day in the sun finally were moved to pity and summoned an officer to remove the horse. It was 3:50 when Chief MoCarthy drove the horse away, almost too weak to walk. It had been tied there for near- ly eight hours. On Friday evening of last week quite a n umber of the members and adherents of the Trowbridge appointment, met at the parsonage laden with luxuries. A. beau- tiful address was read by Mrs. Halpenny to Mr. and Mrs. Caswell, and then a purse containing twenty-two dollars was handed him, and to Mrs. Caswell, by Miss Annie Cosens, a beautiful silver butter cooler. It was a perfect surprise. A pleasant evening was spent, and mutual regrets expressed that the relation of pastor midpeoplewasabout a to be sever- ed. St. James oburoh, Stratford, was the scene of a very happy event on Tuesday of last week by the wedding of J. D. Riddle, of the G. T. R. Assietant Super- intendent's office, Stratford, to Mies Buckingham, eldest daughter of William Buckingham, manager of the B. M. and L. Co'y. of Stratford, The church was crowded with the friends and acquain- tances of the young couple- At 1:30 p. m. the bride entered the oburoh, leaning on the arm of her father, followed by Mise Carman, of Morrisburg, as brides. maid. The groom, who was supported by Frank.Palmer, met the bride at the altar. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Canon Patterson according to the ritual of the Church of England. The prospects of a large yield of fruit are brighter than they seemed to be a few weeks ago in Lucknow vicinity. Beeler, though yet a village, has three churches which own pipe organs. The Times claims that this beats the record. The mangel.wurtzei will not be over half a crop near Britton. Quite a few farmers are re plowing the ground fur turnips. Rev. J. S. Cook, et Hensall, has r°. Gently graduated as a Ph, B. of Illinois Wesleyan University, after a course of five years. A bicyclist arrived in Clinton on Sat- urday evening baying accomplished upon his steel horse, the whole journey from Sarnia in one day. Ilamah's Creamery Kirkton, is in full blast, and they aro packing large quan- tities of excellent butter for the Seaforth market—epeoially for Glasgow and Edin burgh. The Doherty Organ Company, of Clinton, through one of their agents, is endeavoring to secure a bonds from Peterboro' to establish a large organ the. tory there, The Clinton New Era says :—So in- tense was the heat on Tuesday that it actually hatched out a chicken in the store of Coats & Son. This may seem improbable, but it is nevertheless a fact. Mrs. W. J. Gallagher and three child- ren, of Vancouver, B. C., arrived in Clin- ton recently, on a visit to her mother, Mrs. Duncan. Mr. Gallagher is manager of the Daily Telegram, Vancouver, B. 0. Dr. McLaughlin who has been prae. tieing for sometime in Hensel', has de- cided to leave that place and hang out his shingle in Dashwood, s0ncessor to Dr. Outten. Dr. Outten intends going to the Northwest. F. S. Miller, the defaulting shipping clerk of 'Vm. Livingeloue, of Listowel ; Revs. Mc- Kinnon, Connors and Coiling, of Luck - now, and other Orange friends will ad- dress the meeting. The Lucknow Sentinel says:—Mr. Brasher, accompanied by Mrs.• Brasher and the Mises Marray, spent a day last week at that beautiful resort Black Horse Lake. In the course of the day Mrs. Brasher hooked a four and a half pound black bass, which air. Brasher succeeded eded in safely landing. All the piscatorial sports in the village are envious. The Clinton Driving Park will hold their meeting on Aug. 2801, when the fol- lowing premiums will be given :—The 2:50 class, srotting and pacing, purse 5140, divided into three monies. The 2:52 Mass, t: ottiog or pacing, purse 4200, di. vided into four monies. A mile run, beet two in three, purse 3180, divided in• to two monies, Captain Andrews, the blind life saver of Toronto, was married at Clinton on Saturday to Mies Thornton, the only daughter of W. Thornton. The bride is also blind, which makes the nuptials all the more romantic. The blind life Sav- ing hero first met Mies Thornton at Olin. ton last fall, and sympathy of affliction made them fast friends and finally they fell desperately in love with each other. The following appears among the legal reports of the dailies :—A London girl named Annie Haines, aged 18 is suing Jae. Hastie, of Huron county, for 310,000 damages for breach of promise in marri- age. The defeodant set up hie defence on the fact that the girl'e father had threatened him with an action for seduc• tion of the plaintiff and that to settle this phase of the matter it cost Hastie $475. Frank Anglin, the plaintiff's counsel, demurred to that defence, and Tuesday Juetioe Rose decided that the settlement to the charge of seduction was no bar to the action fcr breach of pro- mise. During a Heavy thunderstorm on Fri. day !set the residence of Samuel Peart, 801 con. of Ueborne, was struck by light- ning. The electric ball first attacked the chimney, and then passing out between the brioks followed the rafter until it Dame to the side of the house ; making its way through it fell on the kitchen floor and from there buried itself in the earth. The inmates of the house happen- ed to be home at the time and but for their speedy action the building would have been ooneumed as it was soon en. veloped in flames. The heavy rain which was falling at the time rendered valuable assistance to Mr. Peart in abetting the fire. The occupants escaped without the slightest injuriee, but were Badly frighten. ed from the sharp report. The Goderich Signal in speaking of the arrest of Chambers, the outlaw, says : Among those who took a deoided interest in Chambers from the time of the shoot, ing up to the present was our townsman Toon, Gundry, the well-known sheriff's bailiff. Tom went down to Clinton to take a hand in the hunt for Chambers, but failed to connect with him. However, on his return home Judge Tome was so pleased with the work done by him that he put him on the list of county con- stables. Since then ;tom, bas continued to have Chambers in hie thoughts and, diaoovering that there wet a good photo. graph of that lively gentleman in Harris. ton, he obtained it and had a number of pictures struck off, These he dietribut' ed where he thought they would do moat good, and amongst others sent a photo to J. "I was troubled with catarrh for over two years. I tried various remedios, and was treated by a number of physi- ciane, but received no benefit until I began to take Ayer's Sarsaparilla. A few bottles of this medicine cured me of this troublesome complaint and nom- pletely restored my health."—Jesse M. Boggs, Holman's Mills, N. 0. "When Ayer's Sarsaparilla was rec- ommended to me for catarrh, I was in- clined to doubt its efficacyHaving tried so many remedies, with little beu- etit hadnoit I faith that anything a mould cure me. I became emaciated from loss of appetite and impaired digestion. I had nearly lost the sense of smell, and my system was badly deranged. I was abourdiscouraged, when a friend urged rhe to try Ayer's Sarsaparilla, and re- ferred me to persons whom it had cured of catarrh.
