When the elevator by-law was passed
by Buell an overwhelming majority, it
was expeoted that the work of construc-
tion would start immediately, but up to
the present the ohaness for a season's
work for the laboring man are slim in-
deed.
Peach trees have been io bloom for
some days and show signs of a large
gathering ; cherries and plums, also in
flower, are heavily budded ; apples and
pear trees are full of flowers, and our -
rants and gooseberries are extremely well
fruited.
Lightning struck the steeple of Knox
ohuroh and tore of some four or five
square feet of shingles. It strnok on the
South side, just where the shingles start
over the gothio window, and can be easily
seen by passers-by. Inside the edifice is
not injured.

employing a grading machine on several

The death of Mrs. Stafford, widow of
the late Rev. E. A. Stafford, D, D.,
daughter of the late Edmund Baird, of
Montreal, occurred in Toronto. Her
death had been expeoted, as she recently
suffered a stroke of paralysis. She was
a sister of the wife of Rev. Dr. Ryckman.
The Newbury Journal bas been sold by
E. A. Hogil to Mise A. L. Tuoker. Mise
Tuoker has been virtually the editor of
the Journal singe its establishment, but
her assumption of complete control gives
her a unique position in Canadian jour:

The Walkerton chair factory which
some time ago became financially involv-
ed has been sold to the Kneohtel Furni-
ture Co., of Hanover. The purchase in-
cluded all the unfinished material in the
factory and the price paid is over and
above the 50,000 mortgage held by the
bank. The company intend to enlarge
the factory and start operations st Duce.
The Verity Plow Go., of Brantford,
have -just bad returned to them twenty
gang plows, which they shipped to Aus-
tralia, via 0. P. R. early in the winter.
In an accident in the Kinking Horse river,
in the Rooky Mountaine, four oars eon•

river. Here they have been all winter
