"I'LL DO WHAT I OA'13,"
Who takes for Ins motto, "I'llde what can,"
Shall better the worldns he goes down life's
The willing young heart makes the capable
man,
And who does what he can oft can do what
he will.
There's strength in the impulse to help thing8
along,
An.forces undreamed of will come to the
aid
Of one who, though weak, yet believes he is
strong,
deals himself to the task unafraid.
"I'll do what I can," is a challenge to fate,
And fate must succumb when We put to the
test;
A heart that is willing to labor and wait
In it's tussle with life Over comes out the
best.
It puts the blue imps of depression to rout
And makes many difficult problems seem
plain;
It mormt0 over obstacles, dissipates doubt
And unravels kinks in life's curious chain.

profitable one, the profits of the capital

high as 25 to 05 per tient, Tho men
formerly engaged in the lumbering beet•

county engage in the growing of sugar
beets in quantities to warrant ',apiheliete
venturing their money here ? It rests
with fermere here to declare themselves.
Taking the experience of Michigan
farriers as a guide we think we should
move in the matter at Once,
The following abatement was furnished
them by the manager of the Bay City
Refinery (—Average price paid farmers
per ton, $55.16 i average yieldper sore,
9;t tone ; average amount paid per sore,
$40,79. Regarding these figures it should
be borne in cried that the land about
Bay City and the country as a whole in
that part of Michigan Is much inferior to
the land in this part of Ontario. We
learn from the results of the experiments
madeby the Government in this 01oiuity
during the present season, that our yield
will average about double that of the
Miohigan farmers, who supply the Bay
City Refinery with sugar baste. Until
the report from the Agrtonitaral College
at Guelph ie received, we cannot say
what percentage of sugar was contained
in the beets grown here but if they are
equal to Miohigau grown beets, viz., 14}
per cent, the growing of sugar beets
should be a highly profitable one to ear
farmers. On good Olean land the Labor
of ualtivatiog and harvesting them is lit-
tle more than is required growing turnips
or mangolde. If the testa now being
made at the College at Guelph of the
beets grown on the test plots in Huron
are sa8ieleotory it is the intention of tbe
local committee to call a meeting of
farmers at an early date and plane oar
information before them and ascertain if
they are prepared to go into growing
sugar beets in quantities to jaetify the
committee in moving further in the
matter, for the purpose of eeouring oapir
tal to erect a proper plant in Clinton.

Interview with Mews- Forrester and
Weir Siuee Their Visit 00 the
Sugar Beet Belt.
People here talk of one thing or another
as the 000aaion takes them—at times it is
the pork packing eetabliahment, the pride
of stook or something else, bat over in
Miobigan they swear by the sugar beet
and they have nose. Over there there is
many a small town or insignificant village
with ite few stores of not mach scoonut.
The people plodded along moan nnoontent•
ed way—taking life ea it came. This was
a few years ago, now it is transformed.
Up went the sugar beet factorise, oat
earn tbe staple farm orope and in were
planted the seed of the eager beet. One
of these small places is Caro. Three.
years ago it was a slovenly, of -no account
place, now it is bright, buoy and beetling,
T11e population has increased and it takes
a number of banks to handle the told
own that seems to flow in there. The
farmers who have been burdened with
mortgagee have thrown off the inonmb•
range and now swaggers around with a
"big fat wad of greenbacks" in hie pooket
and a nice little deposit in the bank.
All this is due to the sugar beet. The
capitalist also makee a haul. The small-
est dividend declared by the least of these
factories is 16 per cent, while some pay
from 20 to 26 per cent, and the factory
that does not cover its own ooet in three
years is rather a poor concern. It is said
that some farmere there are making
52,000 a year up. He grows the beet and
we see ne reason why the same Cannot be
done here. The amount of money pat in
oironlation would be like "tbe golden
goose," alike to the producer of the beet
or the stook•holder in each a factory.
Lest week en opportunity was given to
those interested to visit the great anger
beet belt in Michigan state. The ex-
cursion was promoted by the Berlin
Board of Trade and was run to Bay City,
Caro and Saginaw. D. A. Forrester and
W. Weir were the only exouraiooiete from
here. They went on Tuesday and re.
turned on Thnreday, being away three
days.
Since returning we have had an inter-
view with l,tr. Forrester, who said that
Mr, weir and himself had a splendid
time on their trip, and found those en-
gaged in the industry in above mentioned
places, friendly and oommunioative. en-

They reached Bay City about 5 o'clock
in the evening. The evening panne, hav-
ing noticed their arrival and having had
many visite from former Canadians who
reside there, were only too glad to give
them ail the information regarding our
mission, in their power. They all agreed
that the eager beet induetry has proved
of great advantage to the oity, and eepeo-
felly to the growers of auger beets in that
section of the date.

anger factories in the pity, were visited.
