American dressed beef is selling

distributing mar'ke'ts in the world,

firms located there were interview-

COMPETITION DOES IT.
"It is true that American meats
are sold cheaper in England than in
the United States. And why? Be-
cause here in England we .are in
competition with the meat supply
from the four quarters of the
globe: One cause of the steady rise
in the ()est of meats in the United
States is that the au whey with'his
vast areas of grazing lands in the
middle and far west and south-west
is smatter• ofthe past. Hundreds
of thousands of cattle fattened"an-
nually in former years on the wild
, grasses of the public' domain.
CONSERVATION -A-ND COWBOY.
"Tho Government has driven the
cattle men off the face of the earth,
so to speak, and the grass which
was once free and gave all the peo-
ple cheaper ineat is now going to
waste. This is done under the so -
'called `conservation' policy.
"Much of the once aluigst. limit-
less grazing' land has been put un-
der irrigation and cultivation and
is settled by farmers, who are trait's -
forming those districts formerly in-
habited only by cowboys, cattle,
buffalos and Indians into thriving
communities. No doubt the advan-
tageof this is far greater for the
nation, even 'though the penalty is
Higher meat for the greatly increas-
ed population."
ARGENTINA A FACTOR.
Quito recently an American con-
cern bought from the South Ameri—
can and London owners a control-
ling interest in a.meat-packing con-
cern of Argentina, thus making a
combine and taking a• competitor
out of the field.
The trust has so organized the
business in the United States that
independent butchers no longer ex-
ist to any extent. The retail deal-
ers axe forced to buy their sup-
plies from the Chicago and allied.
Packers and are -practically control-
led by the trust.
The American trust tried some
months ago to get control of the
Smithfield Market in London
'(where meat stalls have been pass-
ed from father to son forr genera-
tiuns) by purchasing the leasesof
tit,•. stalls. After contracts had
been made for a majority of the
stalls the Board of Governors re-
fnsccl to endorse the transfers.
WOULD PLUNDER CONSUMERS
One of the market mantigers
said: "These Americans undoubted-
ly intended to shut out all competi-
tion. They don't care whether they
sell meat from the United States or
from the Argentine Republic; all
they want is to control the market
-..aud plunder the helpless eonsunr-
ers."
There can be no uniform price per
pound for beef or other meats, be-
cause the differentgrades of live
stock vary so in value. And be-
cause of the varying prices of
meats it is cliffieult to determine
just how much higher beef is in the
United States than in England.
}3u, a diligent examination into 'the
subject convinced the Now York
World's representative that meat
is selling at retail in England at
froth 30 to 30 per cent• cheaper than
' in the United States.
