Three yeara ago the Governor of
North Carolina said that: never was
N. Carolina so proaperoua ae since it
baa driven out the ii onater of drinir.
Yi a said that crime bad diminlehed,
that jails were empty, that criminal
dockete now take only two or three
days when they uead to take as many
weeke. Never has there been such a
reformation as has been caused by
driving out the drink,
The Superintendent of public in-
struction of North Carolina said that
school attendance of the Stats had
nearly doubled in two yeara, because
under' the old regime the wen drank
up the money and ceuld not clothe
their boy and girls well enough so
they could go to school, but now the
fathers are putting the money into
clothing for theie children and the
school attendance has almost doubled.
The ministers of nearly all the
churches say that the Church of Gad
is going on with a power never felt
before because "instead of distilled
spirits now they bave the spirit of
God."
A noted man speaking before Con-
gress in favor of the drink traffic said,
"What would we do without our good
s/loons in the State of Indiana?" An
old farmer rose and said "Mr. Senator
do you ask that question just to be
asking or do you want it answered?'
want to be answered" said the
Senator. "Well I will answer your
question" said the old farmer. "We
will raise more corn, more wheat,
more cabbage, more potatoes, and we
will raise less hell."
That ie what we want in Canada,
more factories, more homes, more
business, more farm products, lower
taxes and we want to keep from rais-
ing so much crime, robbery, murder,
suicide, insanity, etc., which have
been such a blight in the past on the
prosperity of the country, -H. Arnott.

The Soldier's Dream
Upon a field of battle in a tent a
soldier lay,
He dreamed a dream of Homelife, and
mother far away;
He thought he beard her singing, as in
days no more to be,
When all were home together, in the
cottage by the sea,
Chorus
Its long since 1 heard her singing,
Its a long time, don't you see?
Its a Iom way to mother's cottage,
Mother's cottage by the sea;
Could I farewell to battle,
No more 8s1e3t life ensnare;
Quickly I would fly to mother,
My heart's right there, its a there.
He could hear the sheep a b e /ting,
saw the cows as home they came,
He could hear the children singing, a
playing in the lane;
He saw his father Coming, through
the open door
And mother and the children, as in
days of yore.
Chorus
Just then the bugle sounded, it woke
him for the fray,
Mother and the cottage home, soon
vanished far away;
He faced the foe with courage, know-
ing naught of fear,
When wounded in the battle, then
mother he thought near. B

The tugle Blast To Canada,
Readers of the newspapers and fol-
lowers of the course of the war mast
long ago have become convinced that
the situation growe more and more
intense and critical day by day, Great
Britain is faced not alone by outside
enerules, but by labor troubles and by
lack cf thos€ Immerse internal re•
sources in the matter of food rro3uc4
tion that Germany and Austria-IUun,
gars p3ssess, She cannot feed her-
self, and is compelled to rely largely
on other Countries for a supply of the
necessaries of life. In such case the
duty of her children is distinctly plain,
It is noteworthy cf her enemies that
they are not only thoroughly trotted
but that they are enduing with what
fortitude they possess the rigid mili-
tary enforcements that are placed
upon them for the conservation bath
of food and material, Bvery man,
woman and child, from the Kaiser
down, bays been put on rations. The
idea is three -fold, to guard against
any possible emergencies, to mislead
the foe into over -confidence and by
thoroughness to bring such pressure
to bear as wilt beaten the final deci-
sion. Britain is pursuing the same
course. She has not yet found it
necessary to place her population in-
dividually on short rations. but she
bas found it desirable to take over
munition factories in order to ensure
supplies that mean either life or
death to the nation. Meantime, Ger-
many by cowardly submarine assas-
sination is endeavoring to starve her
people and cripple her resources.
With such a state of affairs existent
it is hardly necessary to explain to
stay-at-home Canadians how best they
can fulfill their manifest duty and
show the burden -bearers how com-
pletely they possess their sympathy,
But the bugle blast has i s rallyir g
power in peace as in war. To all tl e
people, and to farmers, breeders and
settlers in particular, the Patriotism
and Production movement that is in
progress is blowing its bugle, or, in
other words, carrying its message. I's
object is o arouse all and sundry to
the part they are called on to play
That port dues nut of necessity wan

as far as egg Production is concerned,
and it is time for the breeders of this
country to get busy. There are won.

The best producers have broad bad -

widespread, giving plenty of room for
