A MAN'S TRUE MEASURE.
It is not his loud professions from the
pulpit or the pew,
And not his seeming kindly acts when
in the public view.
'Tis by his evening fireside he stands
before the screen,
And there the imp or angel, the churl
or king is seen.
The world may smile and call him great
and greet him with a cheer,
But if, when day has ended and even-
tide draws near,
His wife grows heavy-hearted, and his.
children pale with fright,
His soul is ugly, black and mean—an
inch or so in height.
He may be known to very few, but
those who know him best,
Await his coming footsteps as the sun
sinks down to rest,
There are faees at the window, looking
up the lonely street,
Then a scramble for the doorway and
a rush of eager feet.
The eldest takes his dinner -box, the
next one takes his hand,
And the youngest, on his shoulder,
rides along in triumph grand.
The good wife leaves the kitchen to see
the merry throng,
With a smile upon her features and
within her heart a song.
In the world of men and letters he may
be of pigmy height,
But he towers to the heavens when we
measure him aright.
—John L. Shroy.

it was attempting to make its way
across the Detroit River near Windsor
on the ice floes. It is thought the
animal had come to the river to drink
and had been carried away from the
shores by the moving ice.
The death occurred last week in
London of Lord Lister, who was fam-
ous as the discoverer of the antiseptic
system of treatment in surgery. As
a result of Lord Lister's antiseptic
treatment the number of deaths from
surgical wounds immediately decreased.
He was born in 1827 and was the first
peer from the medical ranks,

By vote of Parliament on Monday,
January 22nd, the political agitation
based on the Ne Temere decree was
killed—or at any rate stunned—by mo-
tion of Premier Borden to adjourn the
debate on Lancaster's bill regarding
marriage, and refer the question of
federal or provincial jurisdiction to the
courts—without any pledge or sugges-
tion that if jurisdiction were decided to
be with the Dominion, any legislative
action would be initiated by or on be-
half of the Government. The sand-
bagging was followed by burial under
87 Conservative and Nationalist votes
—a majority of 20.
Five Conservatives and all the Libor-
als present, at total of 01, voted
against the motion of Premier Borden.
Without doubt the interment was ac-
companied by the pious hope of the
Government and its friends that there
would be no resurrection.
Lancaster, Edwards, Maclean (South
York), Wallace, Clark (North Bruce),
Northrup, Burnham, and Porter, Con-
servatives, declared for the acceptance
by the House of Lancaster's bill. But
when the vote was taken, Wallace,
Clark, Northrup, Burnham and Porter
voted with the Premier.
Lancaster, Edwards, Maclean, Kidd
and Blair,'Conservatives, voted against
the Premier's motion.
Having servedits purpose in securing
the return of the Conservative party to
power, and having been sandbagged and
buried by those for whose benefit it
was brought into being, it may safely
be assumed that the last has been
heard of the Ne Temere decree agita-
tion— at any rate until a Liberal Gov-
ernment is again in power.
In Place of Scales.
As many families have no scales for
weighing, this is a tab:e of measures
which can be used instead:
Weighing is always best, but not al-
ways convenient.
The cup used is the ordinary kitchen
cup, holding half a pint.
A set of tin measures from a gill to
a quart, is very useful in all cooking op-
erations.
One quart of sifted flour is one pound.
One pint of granulated sugar is a pound.
Two cups of butter packed are one
pound.
A. wine glassful is half a gill.
Eight even tablespoonfuls are a gill.
Four even saltspoonfuls make a tea-
spoonful.
A MODERN MEDICINE
FOR TI -IE BABY,
What mother cannot remember the
times of her childhood when the castor
oil bottle was brought into use—the
dread with which she looked forward
to a dose of it --the fight she put up
when forced to take it. Surely all
mothers will be glad to spare their
little ones this discomfort—this dread.
Modern science has bane ed the bad
smelling, evil -tasting, riping castor
oil and given in its lace a modern
remedy—a remedy easant to take,
mild, though thorou h in action, abso-
lutely harmles nd something the
little one won't ead. That medicine
is Baby's Own ablets —the only rem-
edy used by thousands of mothers of
little ones — the medicine that has forced
castor oil and "soothing" syrups out of
the home and has taken their place to
bring health to baby and joy to the
parents. The Tablets are sold by medi-
cine dealers or by mail at 25 cents a
box from The Dr. Williams' Medicine
Co., Brockville, Ont.
Parry Sound ratepayers carried the
by-law to bonus the proposed iron fur-
nace by a large majority.
Mr. C. C. James, deputy minister of
agriculture for Ontarso, has been ap-
pointed a special Dominion commis-
sioner to find methods of co-operation
between the federal and provincial
authorities in the promotion of agricul-
tural interests. The appointment is an
excellent one. Mr. James' loss to the
Ontario department will not be easily
repaired.
