Sugar Getting Dear.
The raise in the price of sugar is
stated by wholesalers here to be the
result of crop reports, Beet crops
throughout Canada are said to be poor
owing to the dry weather, and the
cane crop in Europe is also small.
The price has advanced several pointe
during the last few days and highter
prices are looked for.
Matches Did This.
On August 3rd. fire destroyed the
barn of Air. Joseph Yellow of Usborne,
togetner with two horses, four calves,
nine pigs, about 25 tons of hay and
green feed, and his season's crop of
wheat. ' Most of the machinery and a
new buggy were also burned. The
fire was started by children playing
with matches. The barn and contents
were partly covered by insurance.
Attacked By A Rat,
Madeline Williams, the little daugh-
ter of Mrs. Frank Williams, West
Ward, had an experience, which few
of much older age would envy, of
being attacked by a. huge house rat
on Monday evening last. The little
lady, in company with several play-
mates, was playing in the yard near
the hoose, when a rat, of no mean
proportion, put in an appearance.
The youngsters, thinking that the
rodent wished to join them in their
play, becatne rather too familiar with
him, with the result that when Made-
line approached the animal, it sprang
at her and fastened its fangs deep into
one of her hands, A neighbor, on
hearing the child's screams, went to
the rescue and soon put a quietus to

A little girl not three years old, the
daughter of Mr. P. Downing, recdntly
arrived in London England, and holds
the world's record for baby travel.
She was born in San Francisco, and
here are the trips she has made :—San
Francisco to Fresno (California) and
back, 1,000 miles ; front San 'Francisco
to London (England) 8.000 miles ; from
London to Toronto, 3,000 miles ; from
Toronto to Davidson (Maine) 800
miles ; from Davidson to London again
2,800 miles ; from London to Too-
woomba (Africa) via Capetown, 11,000
miles. The total distance travelled is
32,100 miles.
Money In Garden Stuff.
The Kingston Reporter gives the
following :—"A tomato grower on
the front road sent away a hundred 11
quart baskets last week, and received
a cheque back for a trifle over $200.
Of course this week the price is down
to $L25 a, basket, but even at that for
early tomatoes, a man can make More
than from tobacco at the highest
pt'ice. Another grower has stored
away in the bank about a thousand
dollars from his tomatoes already, and
the season not half through yet. Let-
tuce, cabbage, cucumbers and etc., are
alt bringing fancy figures." Nothing
the matter with the home market.
Two Crops This Year.
The Leamington Post says :—A
most wonderful exhibition of the
fertility of our soil and mildness of
climate was exhibited this week, and
we doubt if a like circumstance ever
happened anywhere else. On the
first of May, J. G. Bennett planted
'several hundred tobacco plants on his
lot in Leamington, and being fully
