Dealer — South. Both
sides vulnerable.
The contract -- three no-
trump - and the declarer
— South — were the same
at both tables, although the
auctions differed slightly.
The Brazilian dealer opened
one club and partner made
an ."inverted" raise to two,
showing a good hand with-
out a four card major. East
overcalled two spades and
now South passed to con-
firm a minimum opening.
North cue bid three spades
probing for no-trump and
South obliged, ending the
auction.
'Me sequence, at the other
table was simpler since
East refrained from bid-
ding. South began with one
diamond and rebid two no-
trump over partner's two
clubs. North then raised to
game.
Where the U.S.A. was de-
fending West dutifully -led
his singleton spade drawing
the ten, queen and ace. East
ducked two diamond offer-
ings, then declarer switched
to clubs putting West on
lead with the third round.
Rather than break hearts,
West got off play with his
remaining diamond,., and
East, on winning, shifted to
the jack of hearts. Declarer
withheld the queen but won
the dummy. He had his nine
tricks now — one spade, one
heart, three., diamonds and
four clubs — but unfor-
tunately could not separate
them even though he had
carefully unblocked the
clubs. With communications
severed, there was no way
to cash both his long dia-
mond and dummy's clubs.
He was forced, therefore, to
concede a one trick set.
In the replay, West, with-
out benefit of partner's help
in the auction, led a heart
from the king, giving de-
clarer an extra trick imme-
diately. Again diamonds
were attacked. But here
East won the first and led
back his remaining heart,
thereby clearing the suit for
