Wingham, England, a village in the county of Kent, dates back more than a thousand years. The Domesday Book of 1086 records 113 men in Wingham, which would indicate a total population of about 400. The village probably received its name between the seventh and ninth centuries when the Anglo- Saxon Winga became master of the village or "ham". Not many local records are available as the village, with a population of about 1,500, is governed from Canterbury. However its geographical location midway between the medieval port of Sandwich and Canterbury on the road to London made it a stopping place for many of the English kings. Their retinue probably stayed at the Red Lion Inn, still standing today. ENGLISH SISTER—Rita, Bill and Mike Crump stand at me sign announcing me vnhage of Wingham, England.
