traces history
for centuries
While Wingham is celebrating,
' with justifiable pride, its cen-
tenary as a town, those hundred
years are only a page in history
to its English sister.
Wingham, England, a village
in the county of Kent, dates back
more than a thousand years.
The Domesday Book of 1086
records 113 men in Wingham,
which would indicate a total
population of about 400. The
village probably received its
name between the seventh and
ninth centuries when the Anglo-
Saxon Winga became master of
the village or "ham".
Not many local records are
available as the village, with a
population of about 1,500, is
governed from Canterbury.
However its geographical
location midway between the
medieval port of Sandwich and
Canterbury on the road to London
made it a stopping place for
many of the English kings. Their
retinue probably stayed at the
Red Lion Inn, still standing
today.
