WINGHAM JOKERS—These members of the champion-
ship team of 1959-60 returned to the ice to take on a
combined team of Stainton Spitfires and Crawford Dodgers
in an oldtimer hockey game Saturday night. Making up the
team were: (back row) Murray Kerr, Don Mahood, George
Skinn, John Fry, Bob Middleton, Gary Templeman and Bill
Henry; (front) Bill Crawford, Ray Walker, Jack Hotchkiss,
John Merkley, Jim Wild and Wayne Brown.
Match of the year
ends'i*n a 6.6 draw
The hockey match of the year
was played Saturday night with
Lhe !959- U1 Winaham Jokers and
a combined team of 1949-51
vintage Stainton Spitfires,
reinforced with some younger
Crawford Dodgers, battling to a
6-6 draw at the Wingham Arena.
A capacity crowd of fans, some
of them oldtimers too, filled the
rink to watch the action and
cheer on their favorites in the
battle between the skating legs of
the Jokers and the crafty skill of
the Spitfires.
Murray Stainton, captain of the
Spitfire -Dodger team, quickly
showed.he hasn't lost any of the
old magic as he stickhandled in
on John Merkley in the Joker
goal and scored with only 10
seconds gone in the first period.
Not until Stainton lifted his stick
in triumph did it become ap-
parent he had the puck tied to the
stick, but the goal counted
anyway.
The teams traded goals
throughout the period, with
Wayne Brown and Murray Kerr
scoring for the Jokers and
Ellwood 'Elbows' Irwin notching
another for the Stainton team,
and the period ended in a 2-2
deadlock.
Good checking and some pretty
hot goaltending kept the second
period scoreless until the 14:22
mark when Irwin broke through
for his second goal of the game,
putting the Stainton team up 3-2.
A short time later Doug Wallace
widened the margin to 4-2 on a
pretty two-way passing play with
Murray Stainton. Before the
period ended Ray Walker tallied
for the Jokers to bring them
within one at 4-3.
In the third period George
Skinn scored early to tie the score
at 4-4, but Irwin came back with
his third and fourth goals of the
night, including one while
shorthanded, to give Stainton's a
6-4 lead. It looked for a while as if
t. gam rc ,.^, the bag, but
another goal by Skinn narrowed
the gap to 6-5 and late in the
game, after goaltender Lavi
Purola wandered into the corner,
.Jim Wild intercepted a pass and
whistled the puck into the empty
net to tie things up again A wild
final minute of play produced
good chances at both ends, but
the game ended In a 6-6 tie
Referee Ed Daer and linesmen
Bill Kerr and Tom Deyell kept
the game well in hand The at-
mosphere of the match stayed
friendly but players on both sides
showed a lot of spirit and desire
and about half the penalties
handed out were for boarding, as
players got a little over -zealous
in their checking along the
boards
