Behind them is a plaque recently pre- sented to Fred as the first dealer In the province to sell more than 100 John Deere snowmobiles In one season. Many Wingham people don't realize the prominence some local businesses hold in the business community, in trade organizations or in particular companies, but some Wingham businesses have made a name for themselves over a large area, bringing customers and a little renown to town. One of these is Fred McGee Auto Electric at the corner of Josephine and Maple streets. The business was recently awarded a plaque by John Deere for being the first John Deere dealer in Ontario to sell more than 100 new company snowmobiles in a season. McGee's sold 118. Owners Fred and Grace McGee decided to put on an extra push to sell snowmobiles and other consumer product equipment made by John Deere and the company has become the largest consumer product dealer John Deere has in the province. Throughout the growth in consumer product sales, McGee Auto Electric hasn't ignored its specialty which the company name makes clear. Service stations from as far away as Kincardine, Mount Forest, Clinton, Goderich, Hanover and Walkerton send major auto electrical repairs to McGee's. Generators, starters and other major auto electrical components are sent to the local business for major repairs. Other companies which handle such major auto electrical repairs are pretty scarce, Mr. McGee says. The closest ones are probably in London and Owen Sound. V , ed McGee Auto Electric was started Oct. 28, 1968, when the McGees bought the business from Mrs. McGee's father, Robin Campbell. Prior to that Fred had worked for his father-in-law and had specialized in the electrical systems of cars, trucks and trac- tors. "We sort of pioneered in that area." Mr. McGee said. New products hit the shelves fairly often in the consumer products end of the business and changes in vehicles have been dramatic over the years, but much of the staff at the auto electric shop has been with the company since it opened in 1968 and thev have been Wingham .. . able to follow the changes. Ralph Nixon, Jim Carr and Farish Moffat have been with the McGees since 1968. Ralph is auto service manager, Jim is in parts and Farish works in the office. Henry Beyersbergen heads the small, engines department, Don Procter splits his time between auto and small engine'repairs and both Jeff Hayes and the McGees' son Ron are apprenticing as auto mechanics. Lloyd Benninger is in parts and sales and Lorne McDonald also splits his time between parts and sales. In addition to the others, Fred and Grace are also fulltime. Students are often hired in the summer to help with the busy season, but presently there is just one part-time, worker, Chris Procter, who works in the small engines section. Of the fulltime help the majority work in servicing, which Mr. McGee says shows the focus of operations at Fred McGee Auto Electric. Even fairly rare foreign vehicles like eastern European farm tractors are repaired by the company. Mr. McGee said his workers make an extra effort to provide service for farm machinery and realize not only how important the auto electric business can be to a farmer who has electrical problems at a busy period, but know the farm business is also important to the company. "Without the rural areas we probably wouldn't have a viable business," Mr. McGee said. Service has been a priority with the business since it was started. There are files kept on every customer who buys a battery, tires or any major John Deere product. Anyone wanting service on one of the products doesn't have to remember when it was purchased, how much it cost and its service record. That is all in the files. Though Fred McGee Auto Electric has achieved some success by its practice of treating its customers as well as it can, that success isn't the reason for trying to treat customers nicely. It's just that the people at Fred McGee Auto Electric feel things should be done that way. Ini*ts 100th year P, t' i
