Sunday, January 78, marks a
special day in churches
throughout Canada and around
the world. That day has been set
aside as World Leprosy Day and
is designed to draw attention to
the needs of the many people in
the world who are affected by
this disease. Many churches will
donate offerings, hold special
services and offer prayers for the
help of leprosy victims and those
who work to help them around
the world.
Leprosy is not a real problem
to Canadians. There are only
about ioo cases in this country,
all of them non-infectious since
they have been receiving
treatment. In other countries of
the world, however, leprosy
victims number in the millions.
Of the world's 15 million suf-
ferers, about one-third are
children or young people. It is
estimated that in 1979, the In-
ternational Year of the Child,
100,000 more young people will
contract leprosy. In addition to
the physical pain and mental
anguish caused these young
people by the disease, it also
means a disruption in studies and
dislocation from home en-
vironment.
Since 1892, many have been
helped by the Leprosy Miami=

possible the attendance of many
delegates from Third World
countries to the International

Christians throughout the
country are urged to mate
Sunday a special day in which to
consider the needs of those who
suffer from leprosy and those
who work among the sufferers.
Special donations and special
prayers will help these people as
they fight this scourge of
mankind.
