spent last Thursday in Toronto
and visited with Mrs. Eloise
Aitcheson.
Mrs. Crosby Sotheran visited
for several days last week with
relatives in Strathroy and Lon-
don.
The Fordwich Senior Citizens
who attended the Zone 33 Rally in
Wroxeter on October 13 were
Mrs. Wray Cooper, Miss Ruth
Johnston and Mrs. Crosby
Sotheran.
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Johnston
were guests Saturday at the
Walker -Bailey wedding in
Hagersville and were also ac-
companied by Bev Little of Shel-
burne.
Rev. John Stinson and Mr. and
Mrs. Austin Stinson attended the
Moderator's barbecue and rally
at Mitchell last Wednesday even-
ing

Hospital where he underwent
surgery last week.

Miss Beswetherick
is guest speaker
for Fordwich ueif
FORDWICH — Miss Lenora
Beswetherick, who recently tour-
ed China, was the guest speaker
when the afternoon unit of the
United Church Women met in the
Sunday School room of the
church on Thursday, October 14.
Miss Beswetherick showed
slides and gave an interesting
commentary on her trip. She was
thanked by Mrs. Parker Eurig.
The worship service was con-
ducted by Mrs. William Wilson
and Mrs. Clarence MacLaughlin
beside a lovely Thanksgiving
worship centre. Mrs. Wilson gave
the invocation on the theme
"Blessings". Mrs. MacLaughlin
led in the Litany of Thanks and
read the scripture, concluding
with the poem, "A Thankful
Heart". A solo, "Count Your
Blessings", was sung by Mrs.
Jack Wilson.
Mrs. William Wilson read a
poem entitled "Life's Busy Thor-
oughfare". The program consist-
ed of an article, "The Spirit of
Thanksgiving", by Mrs. Wray
Cooper.
The business was conducted by
Mrs. Scott Clarkson, unit presi-
dent. An invitation was read from
Clifford UCW to attend their
Thankoffering service on October
24 at 8:30 p.m. Thank -you letters
were read from several who had
attended the 75th anniversary of
the church on September 26.
Rev. T. H. Fleetham closed the
meetiAg with a benediction pray-
er. Lunch hostesses were Mrs.1.
Killey. Mrs. S. Bride, Mrs. G.
Ashton and Mrs. Wally Gibson.

War Veterans' Reunion held in
the Wingham Legion. Abaft 45
attended.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Gibson of
Listowel visited Sunday with Mr.
and Mrs. Tom Hutchison.
Rev. William Craven of God-
erich conducted services on Sun-
day. Next Sunday there will just
be one service at 11 a.m. in Ford-
wich when Rev. George Anderson
of Exeter will be in charge. The
new carpet will be dedicated. St.
Stephen's Church in Gorrie will
join with Fordwich and any visit-
ors will be most welcome. A
social hour will follow.

to Walkerton hospital.

Toronto spent the weekend with
Miss McElwain and Mr, and Mrs.
George Pittendreigh, and also
visited with John McElwain in
Listowel Memorial Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Gary Sothern,
Tim and Tracy of Palmerston
visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs.
Bill Sothern.
Miss Elva Foster is confined to
Walkerton hospital. She is wished
a speedy return to good health.
Hanover native
will receive
honorary degree
An exhibition of paintings by
Carl Schaefer will be held in an
area occupied by the University
of Waterloo's Department of Fine
Arts in the new building at 415
Phillip St., October 18-22. This
will coincide with the conferment
of an honorary degree upon Mr.
Schaefer at UW's fall convoca-
tion, Friday afternoon;
Most of the works to be ex-
hibited were done within the
years 1935-71; most were painted
in the Kitchener -Waterloo area or
nearby, and most are on loan
from local collections.
The Schaefer exhibition coin-
cides not only with the honorary
degree conferment, but also with
the opening of the new building,
which is being rented by the uni-
versity, and occupied by several
academic departments.
Mr. Schaefer was born at Han-
over, in 1903, and is well known as
an artist and art teacher; he is
the former head of drawing and
painting at the Ontario College of
Art, in Toronto. In 1940 he was
awarded a Guggenheim Fellow-
ship. During the war he also
served as a war artist with the
RCAF.
A reception for the artist will be
held at the setting for the exhibi-
tion, Thursday, Oct. 21, at 3:30
p.m.

council approves
eight permits
Eight building permits were
approved by East Wawanosh
Township council at the monthly
meeting. G. McDowell, J. New-
ell, N. Bonnett, M. Scott,
Guenther ReUb, William Neth-
ery, Tom Black and R. Burchill
received the permits.
A trailer permit was approved
for Bill Empey, subject to the
approval of the Huron County
Health Unit.
Council also approved a $10
payment to the Clerks and Trea-
surers Section of Huron County
Municipal Officers Association in
regard to attendance of the clerk
and treasurer at a meeting.
Road accounts of $1,904.51 and
general accounts of $6,141.96
were approved and paid.
