Dr. Bette Stephenson, Minister
of Labour, has announced that
only arenas that have been certi-
fied as safe by a professional en-
gineer will be allowed to open
next fall.
In December 1975 the Minister
addressed a letter to the heads of
councils of all local municipali-
ties asking them to procure a re-
port from a professional engineer
on the arena's safety.
Dr. Stepenson commended
those municipal councils who
filed reports and complied with
the directions issued by the In-
dustrial Safety inspectors. She
asked that those who had not
complied do so immediately to
protect the lives of the children
and the adults in the community.

Of these 350 "suspect" arenas,
200 have been inspected in the

closed. Some of these (57) arenas
have been demolished, replaced
or repaired in the meantime. The

in a few cases where engineers'
reports state that the building is
capable of withstanding certain
wind and dead loads, arenas have
been allowed to remain open until
October 15th to accommodate
summer activities. However, the
Minister warned, "We are cer-
tainly trying to be charitable but
it's difficult to be excessively
charitable when human safety is
involved."
Municipalities have received
five letters concerning arenas in
the past five years. October 1970,
a recommendation to obtain a
professional engineer's report on
arena safety; November, 1971, a
similar letter; August 1972, a let-
ter requesting confirmation of
arena information in Ministry's
files; November, 1974, copies of
previous three letters together
with a qu&tionnaire to be com-
pleted and returned; December,
1975 letter from Dr. Stephenson.

he is the idol of a cult that con-
tinually expands. His films are
shown at festivals around the
world and repeated television
showings of his comedies have
made him known to generations
born after his death.
"W. C. Fields and Me," star-
ring Rod Steiger as the comedy
genius and Valerie Perrine as his
mistress, is an affectionate film
about the life and times of a
legendary entertainer. The
screenplay was based on the book
by Carlotta Monti, who, although
unknown to the general public,
lived with Fields for many years
in a relationship that lasted until
his untimely death. She was a
vivacious, gentle girl with strong
religious convictions, whose love
and loyalty for the comedian, a
difficult human being, was strong
and unwavering.
Also starring in "W. C. Fields
and Me" are John Marley, seen
as the head of a Hollywood studio,
and Jack Cassidy who portrays
John Barrymore, one of Fields'
faithful friends. Arthur Hiller is
the director.

innings were a sign of good things
to come. Moorefield won the
game 16-8.
Bob Foxton was a stand out in
this game when he made a fan-
tastic running catch in centre
field that was well tagged. He
also led the hitting with four hits
out of four at bat. Bruce Foxton
was another player to deserve
mention as he had three hits and
kept up a constant chatter while
catching. It seems the other boys
are down on themselves as you
could hear a pin drop at times ex-

the game and did a very com-
