Tbey all appeared in diff eat Shaper and sizes Saturday at the Craft Show ►C held at the Howick Community Centre .1 by Stephen's Anglican Church of Gorrie. Nellie King, president of St. • Stephen's Guild, said this is the woo first year such a show has ever been staged in the area. Although the majority of home-made pro- ducts, crafts and displays were done by local people, some came from as far as London, Kitchener and Elmira to display and sell their items. A l ` While some displays were ordi- nary in nature, there were others that were quite unique and pecu- liar. One of the more interesting displays was done by Frances ` McKee of Elmira. Doll faces l made of dried apples and wire =' bodies were among these dis- plays. GORDON BURN ETT of Fordwich displays hand -carved sleighs and carriages Saturday the ted lYLpartiss clan saibyshboutartwo the ocular bobby at Craft Show held at the Howick Community Centre and sponsored by St. Stephen's Anglican Church. Mr. Burnett claimed that the home-made took years ago aft' her mother saw similiar wagon about 200 hours to complete and said he became interested in carving these particular items because he had ones at other craft shows. "My mother started to always grown up with horses and wagons. He also started this hobby because, to his knowledge, "not too make these dolls one Christmas many people do this kind of thing." and since then it has mush- roomed," she said. Since not too many of these dolls are on the market these days, Miss McKee said a greater demand for them is being seen. "Different craft t shops have contacted us to make the dolls for them," she said. 1 With the help of manicure sets, miniature carving knives and heat lamps, more than 15 dolls , are made at one time. She said .s most of the talent centres around E the carving of faces since the job is a very delicate one. And most j r of these dolls are always doing something — whether it be read- ing, fishing or knitting. ;Hb Another display of blind craft work by Jack Clements of Goder- ✓ i ich proved to be an interesting one to visit. Mr. Clements, who is blind, has laced wallets and } purses for the last 20 years. He said the purses and wallets from the • -Canadian Institute of the Blind in Toronto have kept him quite busy with the bobby. "Before I started lacing, they sent a teacher from London to in- struct me before I did it myself," he said. Mr. Clements ents said it - takes anywhere between one and e two hours to lace each wallet ,.. while he averages about one purse lacing a day. "I don't use ., any special instruments. I just do ' it on my own," he said. ' Other displays at the show in- `' a '' eluded hand carved wagons and sleighs, fungus arrangements on barnboard, duster dolls and knit- ting products. All who attended had a wide variety of items to choose from and were never at a loss to see something out of the ordinary. MARG ENGLISH of Wingham, right, and Phyllis McMichael of Bluevale study a floral arrangement on barnboard made of fungus at the Howick Community Centre Craft Show >aturday. Mrs. English's display was made from dried plant life which she found in the Ningham area. THIS WALKING is making my feet tired and swollen.
