INSTALLATION & REPAIR MANAGER
A coin telephone replacement and conversion pro-
gram involving the installation of new single -slot
coin telephone sets, a 20 -cent charge' for local calls
from some pay phones, and the provision of
emergency calling without coins from all outdoor -
located booths will take place in this area from Feb-
ruary 25 to.March Sth.
The 20 -cent rate, the first increase sigce 1952, is
already effective in most Ontario communities and
was authorized by the Canadian Transpo*t Commis-
sion on August 15, 1974.
The increase does not;- however, apply to public
telephones located in railway stations, bas terminals,
hospitals, nursing homes, rooming )souses, chutches
and those on sidewalks adjacent to a pub➢iic
thoroughfare. At all these locations, the 10 -cent rate
will remain.
The new single -slot coin phones developed by Bell -
Northern Research and manufactured by Noethern
Electric, are from a user's point of view, larger and
have only single coin slots for five, ten and 25 -cent
pieces instead of three on the old-style phone.
Following the trend to electronic switching, the
familiar coin sounds now heard when money is de-
posited have been replaced by electronically -produc-
ed tones which are inaudible to the user's ear.
Because of the two rates which will apply, instruc-
tional cards at each public telephone will clearly in-
dicate whether the cost of a local call is 10 or 20 terf
and if an emergency call to "0" Operator can
made without coins.
