Mrs. Robertson was a regular for many yews over CKNX radio and television and played with the famous " Bam Dance" Wive during the late 1940s and '50s. She said she is hoping to spend more dine batwing and reading, but slniicte nds to teach piano and organ lessons. Cora Robertson retires as local church organist By Margaret Arbuckle Those who think Cora Robertson's recent retirement as organist at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Wmgham marks the end of her involvement with music couldn't be more wrong_ After all, how could she totally give up something that has meant so much to her all her life? Being a church organist is a grueling and time- consuming job, she said.. So after 18 years as organist, she has decided she wants more time to herself, but she intends to continue teaching piano and organ lessons to her 24 music students.. Raised in the Clifford and Harriston area, Mrs. Robertson's earliest memories are of sitting at a piano. In fact, she had already taught herself how to play by ear before starting music lessens at the age of six. Ten years later, when she was 16 and the family had moved to Wingham, young Cha was giving lessons herself_ Also in the meantime, she started an orchestra which went on to play at the fledgling radio station in town, CKNK. Mrs. Robertson said she is proud to have been a part of the early days of broadcast history in Wingham_ She also was lucky to meed a man with the same musical inclinations as she, Don Robert--, son of Bluevale„ who played the bass fiddle and sang_ In 1940 they married and formed the popular and long-lasting Ranch Boys group. The Ranch Boys featured local performers Lite the Robertsons and the late Ross Maim. They became famous through the Saturday night ""Kam Dance" program which was broadcast live each week from towns all over Southwestern Ontario. Several other performers got their start on Barn Dance, like Al Cherney and a tall, gangly kid from London who used to hitchhike to the outlying towns just to sing one song over the air_ His name was Tommy Hunter_ Those days were hectic, but exciting too, said Mrs_ Robertson_ Everything was done live then which meant if you made a mistake, well, you just had to live with it When teles first came to be in the early '50r, the Ranch Boys became the stars of their own show "'Circle 8 Ranch"' which ran for 23 years_ Yes, those years were busy, with being on the road, raising a family, plug doing a weekly television show, but Mrs- Robertson said she wouldn't trade one minute_ After selling their Bluevale creamery in the early 1960s, the Robertsons moved to Wiirgham_ hi 196a, Harold Victor Pym, est at the Presbyterian church. was retiring and when Mrs_ Robertson was asked to take over the position she accepted_ Being a church organist invokes mead, mom than just attending Sunday morn lta,., services, she said.
