The Wingham Advance-Times, 1983-06-22, Page 11The Wingham Advance -Times, June 22, 1983—Page 11 Terry was eight years old. His parents repeatedly warned him to stay away from the creek. On several occa- sions they even spanked him for not obeying the warnings. One afternoon, Terry disappeared. His parents and neighbors searched the neighborhood and the creek. One hour later, they called the police. The police found him. His body was floating in the creek. Face -down. Drowned. Every year more and more families are going through a tragedy like this. The alarm- ing fact is that water tragedies involving chil- dren are increasing. Children are drowning in creeks. They're drowning in lakes at the cottage. They're even drowning at home in backyard pools. Where is the stop to it? Doesn't it start with the parents? Shouldn't they be the ones responsible for knowing where their children are playing at all times? Shouldn't the parents be the ones who are responsible for making sure their children know about water safety? No one has the whole answer to these tragedies. And we at Red Cross don't pretend we do. But, we think we might have part of the answer. Like our water safety courses. These courses were designed not only to teach your children how to swim, but also how to be more water safety conscious. We also offer free literature that offers suggestions on how you can protect your children from water dangers. And all you have to do is pick up your telephone and call your local Red Cross branch for any of this information. Call. For your children's sake.
