Gloria's leaving
world of soaps
HOLLYWOOD - For
three years she has been a
key part of "Days of Our
Lives," but come Novem-
ber GLORIA LORIN will
leave the world of daytime
serials in the hopes of
breaking into prime time,
or a one -woman show, or
whatever the fates bring.
"A few years ago I was a
performer, a singer, and
couldn't even get a chance
to read for a part," she re-
called. "Now I have 'Days'
under my belt and I think
I've shown I can act. At
least I have a sense of ac-
complishment, a sense that
it is time to move on."
Gloria turned down a
chance to do a "Days" spin-
off because she didn't want
to devote four years to a
new show. Of course, that's
also because it wouldn't
have worked for her fami-
ly, which has enough trou-
ble finding time for itself.,
She's married to ALAN
THICKE, a Canadian talk
show host (also writer, pro-
ducer), who has been set to
have his own syndicated
U.S. late night comedy
show this fall. Between
Alan's schedule, and Glo-
ria's - which still includes
singing dates - the
Thicke-Loring clan can
find its home to have
swinging doors.
As a result, Gloria re-
ports they do not socialize
very much, preferring to
spend as much time as
they can with sons BREN-
NAN and ROBIN.
"We try to lead a normal
life," she said. "We always
spend dinner with the kids -
We now seem to have an
extended family, with the
people who work for us and
with us coming over and
being right at home."
With all the activities
she has, Gloria still is plan-
ning to do a second volume
of the "Days of Our Lives"
cookbook, which, like Vol.
I, will be sold to benefit the
Juvenile Diabetes Founda-
tion's research.
"The first one sold 55,000
GLORIA LORING
'... A sense that it is times
to move on'
books and is still avail-
able," she said. "We were
able to raise $350,000 for
research. I now have all
the recipes for the second
one; I just have to find the
backers so we can afford to
print and the time in which
to do it."
She'd : also like to find
time to do more recording
and, believe it or not, Glo-
ria reads all of her fan
Mail because, sheexplains,
"As a singer, I needed the
applause. When you're on
TV, fan mail is the ap-
plause."
Gloria adds, "One thing I
have had is longevity. I
couldn't have been an ac-
tress 10 years ago. I
couldn't have taken those
risks or shown that much
of myself. Now I want to
move on to a variety of
challenges."
JOHN TRAVOLTA and
OLIVIA NEWTON -JOHN,
who made the screen sizzle
in "Grease," have been
teamed again for a movie
that is being described as a
romantic comedy/fantasy.
Travolta plays an inventor,
Newton -John an actress -
and she'll probably sing
only one song. As of this
writing the movie was un-
titled, but CHARLES
DURNING and OLIVER
REED are the co-stars.
Movies on Channel 3

erend Stephen Kumalo, a negro parish priest is presented.

And as the momma whale
said to the baby whale "It's
only when you're spouting
that you get harpooned."
No one is a born storytel-
ler, but with a great deal of
effort a person can avoid be-
coming one.
