The following letter to Cross- roads from a Harriston reader provides a suggestion with which we are in full agreement: May 30, 1983 Dear Editor: Am inquiring once again if you can assist in getting the Brass Bands in our area together. WNW it be possi- • ble to have an article on brass. bands, town bands, etc., in order to get the names of the contact per- sons? Bands are in demand for parades and special events, but no one knows which bands are' still active, e nor do theyknow whom to contact. The town bands are signifi- cant in that they give good groundwork training. The young musicians are pre- pared for bigger things; as well they do much to brigh- ten up the local scene but they are not encouraged by the media. We would like to see band tattoos back in vogue, so that bands would meet for tro- phies in competition. This type of event could be held in rotation each year. But we do not know which towns still have active bands. Your paper serves many com- munities which at one time have had bands, e.g. Milver- ton, Mount Forest. We would like very much to hear from other bands spokespeople. le. Th ree or four bands could start it off and we are sure that other bands would then want to enter into the competition and it could grow. Each band would benefit, by stimulation to better performance, tighter discipline, sharper uniforms. Would appreciate hearing from you. Sincerely Ian G. S. Grafton Box 539 Harriston, Ont. NOG 1Zo Harriston Brass 338-3106 Mr. Grafton's idea is a good one. Many communi- ties in the Crossroads area must have bands and we would be very happy to pub- lish information about them. if you are a leader or secre- tary of a local band, please send information about your organization to Crossroads, Box 390. CBC wins in Audubon film. festival Four CBC television pro- grams have won Certificates of Excellence in the 1983 Au- dubon International En- vironmental Film Festival. 'The Fifth Estate's' The Cruel Camera and "Island of the Moon, a Nature of Things program, won in the Nature - Wildlife Category. The Cruel Camera, produced by- George yGeorge James with asso- ciate producer Brian Vallee. is a behind -the -scenes look at the abuse and slaughter of animals in feature films and the deliberate misrepresen- tation of animal behavior in some television wildlife series. Island of the Moon. produced by Nancy Archi- bald, documents the extraor- dinary wildlife of Madagas- car. Two other Nature of Things films. Windy Bay and A Natural Turn of Events, won certificates in the Land & Resources Category and the Conservation -Ecology Category respectively. Windy Bay. located in the rainforests of the Queen Charlotte Islands, has been threatened by a controver- sial tree farm licence per- mitting logging operations. Its ecological importance has prompted local residents to try to have it declared an ecological reserve. A Natural Turn of Events deals with the success of a wildlife sa'Pctuary in an industrial Setting on Toronto's water- front. Both Windy Bay and A Natural Turn of Events were produced by Nancy Archi- bald. The National Audubon Society. with over half a mil lion members. is one of the United States' largest and oldest conservation or- ganizations. It's Interna- tional Environmental Film Festival was initiated in 1981 to identify the finest films addressing the major en vironmental issues of the day
