By ELLEN APPEL
Summer dresses, T-
shirts, and tote bags are as
easy to stencil as the party
sandwiches described in
last week's column. With
acrylic paints, brushes and
stencils you can turn sim-
ple, inexpensive items into
professional -looking, hand -
decorated fashions.
Stenciling has been pop-
ular for centuries. Over the
years people have sten-
ciled decorations on silks
in the Far East, manu-
scripts in medieval Eu-
rope, flocked walolpaper in
France and almost every-
thing in colonial America.
In colonial times crafts-
people wandered the coun-
tryside with stencils and
paints, exchanging their
skills for room, board and
occasionally some cash.
Itinerant stencilers painted
floors, walls, furniture, and
anything else their hosts
commissioned.
Today an adventurous
stenciler can still make
stencils for painting floors,
walls, furniture and other
__projects. Summer fashions
are a'simpie way for any
one to start.
Here are stenciling di-
rections: '
MATERIALS: Washable,
inexpensive, T-shirt, T-
shirt dress, tote bag or
other fashion; illustration
board; stencil paper from
an art supply or craft shop;
cardboard; acrylic paints;
brushes; utility knife;
masking tape; newspaper.
DRAWING DESIGN: 1.
On illustration board, draw
your own design or copy a
design gn
from a book. 2. If
your design is simple - for
example, a daisy - just
leave spaces between cen-
ter and each petal. 3. If
your design has large
shapes, draw % inch wide
"bridges" to divide shapes
into sections.
CUTTING STENCIL 1.
Tape stencil paper over de-
sign. 2. Carefully cut design
from stencil paper. Note:
Take care when using utili-
ty 'knife. It is recommend-
ed that children and teen-
agers have parental super-
vision.
PREPARATION: 1.
Cover work surface with
newspapers. 2. Lay T-shirt,
dress, tote bag or other
fashion right sideup over
newspaper. 3. Slide card-
board between front and
back, trimming cardboard
to fit if necessary. This will
prevent the back from
being painted by accident.
4. Tape stencil onto fash-
ion.
PAINTING: 1. Dip brush
in paint, remove excess
and apply color through
cut-outs in stencil. Note:
Use too little rather than
too much paint. Otherwise
paint mayn under sten-
cil openings. 2. 1f neces-
sary, apply two coats of
paint. 3. Apply paint by
dabbing, rather than brush-
ing it on. 4. To keep stencil
as close as possible, gently
press down with free hand
as you paint. Hold down
skinny bridge with a pen-
cil.
REPEAT DESIGN: 1.
Paint one area of fashion.
Let paint dry. 2. Move sten-
cil and board to another
area of fashion. Paint
through stencil again. 3.
Keep moving stencil and
board until the design is
painted as desired. 4. Turn
fashion over and stencil
back.
