Stitching
Witchery
By BKIITY W. KINSER
So often when we are
working on large items
(bedspreads, drapes, etc.),
we wish for more surface
than our sewing table al-
lows. Since sewing tables
do not have leaves, we
must come up withy some-
thing else.
If you do not have a
table the same height as
your sewing table, you can
use your adjustable ironing
board. Stand the ironing
board alongside or behind
your sewing table, adjust
to the same height, and you
have a large surface.
The biggest problem
with not having a large
enough surface is that your
work will hang down over
the side, pulling out of posi-
tion and making it difficult
to work.
In a pinch, your ironing
board can also serve as a
cutting table - 0 you have
a cutting board. Simply un-
fold cutting board as far as
necessary and center on
ironing board. This will not
give you a very long cut-
ting surface, but will serve
quite well for small proj-
ects.
Another bandy helper is
a sturdy TV tray with legs.
Place a_ tray n eitheraido .
of . your sewing table ...to_
_.
hold sewing aids, patterns,
or whatever needs a home.
Do keep the tray away
from your foot space, how-
ever, or you will spend a
lot of time picking it up off
the floor!
And here's a back saver
- a small footstool. Tuck
this stool under your sew-
ing table. Then, when you
lean back in your chair to
do a big load of handwork,
pull the stool out, prop
your feet up on it and your
back and legs will love you.
It is a wonderful relief.
Don't overlook those
foldable pattern boxes for
holding all kinds of sewing
items. These boxes are
lightweight, sturdy and get
along well on a sewing
shelf or in a drawer.
How many accessories
can you wear at one time?
How many colors can you
wear?
Granted, there are those
women who can wear
twice too many and still
look fantastic. But most of
us must be careful not to
overdo it or we come out
looking like a crayon box
with spangles.
To judge whether or not
you have "overdone" it,
give each accessory one
point (earrings, bracelet,
rings, belt, scarf, etc.). Give
each color of your ensem-
ble one point. Give your
shoes one point if they are
not the same color as your
skirt or slacks, two points
0 they have bows, clips or
contrasting color.
Give points to plaids, <
large prints, contrasting
trim and puffy sleeves.
Alter you have put yourself
together, count the points.
If the total is 12 to 14, you
are very close to being
overdone. If the total is as
high as 18 to 20, go back in
the house and start all over
again.
Whether you are safe
with 12 or more points de-
pends on your personality,
lifestyle, size, build, etc.
Only you can judge.
1 feel most comfortable
with 10 points or less. My
rule is no more than three
colors and no more than
three pieces of jewelry
(wedding rings don't count
unless they are flashy).
Souhd complicated? Not
at all. You will soon get the
hang of it and will be able
to judge your total very
quickly. If in doubt, re-
move an accessory or two.
It is considerably better to
be a little underdone than
overdone.
Points should also be
given for flashy belt buc-
kles, ruffles, textured or
colored stockings.
If you need to subtract
points, you can exchange.
Replace a contrasting belt
for one the same color as
your dress. Replace a
printed scarf with one of a
solid color.
