Task force will
open hearings___:
at Goderich
An Ontario Liberal task
force studying problems
confronting rural municipal-
ities will open hearings at
Goderich next Wednesday,
June 1.
Chairman John Eakins,
former mayor of Lindsay
and now Liberal MPP for
Victoria-Haliburton, said the
task force will search for
ways to redevelop and renew
the province's smaller
centres.
Questions to be addressed
include: How can we keep
skilled labor in the smaller
towns? How can we make
apprenticeship and Man -
Tower training programs
more suitable to smaller
industries?
— How can we improve the
revenue picture for small
municipalities? How can we
reverse the erosion of
municipal government
autonomy?
--How can we develop
more effective and viable
transportation links between
smaller centres?
— How can smaller
municipalities be helped to
compete more effectively for
jobs and investment?
—How can rural
municipalities strengthen
their political clout?
"The rural municipality
faces unique problems," Mr.
Eakins commented.
"Changing demographics,
mounting unemployment, a
fragile agricultural and
industrial base; each con-
tributes to the pressures.
"It is our hope we can
uncover ways in which the
