GEORGE BROWN r_ Gorrie I Mr. and Mrs. James Gray, Robert and Linda Gray of Toronto and Isobelle Gray of Burlington attended Douglas Gray's graduation last week at Kingston with a bachelor's degree in engineering. Activities included the convocation last Friday and the Royal Military Tattoo at night. A graduation parade was held last Saturday, followed by a reception at Fort Frederick and the graduation ball in the evening at the Sir Archibald Macdonell Centre.. There were 200 graduates. Douglas currently is visiting at his home this week and will be reporting to St. John, Quebec, for the summer months. Recent visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Archie Miller were Mrs. Frank Earls of London, Mrs. Grant Miller and Mrs. Robert Holder of Sudbury. Mr. and Mrs. George Brown visited last Saturday with Mrs. Webster Jacklin of Listowel. MRS. Task force will open hearings___: at Goderich An Ontario Liberal task force studying problems confronting rural municipal- ities will open hearings at Goderich next Wednesday, June 1. Chairman John Eakins, former mayor of Lindsay and now Liberal MPP for Victoria-Haliburton, said the task force will search for ways to redevelop and renew the province's smaller centres. Questions to be addressed include: How can we keep skilled labor in the smaller towns? How can we make apprenticeship and Man - Tower training programs more suitable to smaller industries? — How can we improve the revenue picture for small municipalities? How can we reverse the erosion of municipal government autonomy? --How can we develop more effective and viable transportation links between smaller centres? — How can smaller municipalities be helped to compete more effectively for jobs and investment? —How can rural municipalities strengthen their political clout? "The rural municipality faces unique problems," Mr. Eakins commented. "Changing demographics, mounting unemployment, a fragile agricultural and industrial base; each con- tributes to the pressures. It will hold a series of public meetings across the province.
