Paint a party
sandwich
With paints brush and
stencils You can decorate
almost anything quickly,
inexpensively and with
ease. Some possibilities are
walls, floors, fashions, sta-
tionery, gift wrappings,
windows and, according to
"The Stencil Book" (Van
Nostrand Reinhold Pub-
lishers), by Jim Fobel and
Jim Boleach, you can even
paint a party sandwich.
Stencils are easy to
make yourself. Once you
learn the techniques, you
can try anything, including
the sandwich project, as
described below, from the
book by Fobel and Boleach.

ble Art," or decorative
food, at a department store
bakery. Stenciling became
necessary when orders
grew so large .that they
could no longer hand -paint
each pie, cookie, loaf of
bread and Thanksgiving
turkey individually.
Eventually, they discov-
ered stenciling as a quick,
easy way to decorate ev-
erything. Stenciling is easi-
er than drawing a straight
line, say the authors. They
prove itj with the Victorian
bedding, Colonial hard-
wood floor, Art Nouveau
stationery and other proj-
ects in their book.
In stenciling, you simply
draw a design, cut it out
and paint through the
holes. With one application,
you'll have turned the ordi-
nary into artwork. By
repeating a stencil several
times, you can put a pro-
fessional -looking repeat
pattern on almost any-
thing.
Here are directions for
stenciling sandwiches:
MATERIALS: White
bread; 5 -by -7 -inch illustra-
tion board; masking tape;
stencil paper from an art
supply or craft shop; X-
acto or, utility knife; food
coloring; watercolor brush;
paper cups.
MAKING STENCIL: 1.
Draw your own design or
copy the design shown here
onto illustration board. 2.
Tape stencil paper over de-
sign. 3. Carefully cut the
design from stencil paper.
Note: Take care when
working with X-acto or
utility knife. It is recom-
mended that children and
teenagers have parental
supervision.
PAINTING: 1. Position
stencil on left-hand side of
bread slice. 2. For each
color, place one-half tea-
spoon water into a paper
cup. 3. Mix in food coloring,
the number of drops de-
pending upon intensity of
color desired. 4. Dip tip of
brush into food coloring. 5.
Holding stencil with free
hand, brush color through
the stencil cut-outs. 6. Turn
stencil over onto right-
hand side of bread slice. 7.
Repeat steps 4 and 5.
FINISHING: 1. Toast
stenciled and unstenciled
slice of bread only until
edges are lightly toasted. 2.
Prepare sandwich as de-
sired, with stenciled bread
on top. 3. Cut sandwich in
half so that each half con-
tains a complete design.

Paint
for
Q. We have an older
home. The outside has
clapboard wood sidings.
We want to refinish it this
summer. However, we can-
not decide if we should Just
paint it or take our time
and patience and strip it
and stain it.
What do you recommend
we do? And, what materi-
als should we use? m
Chazy, N.Y.
A. If the surface already
has a painted finish, refin-
ishing with paint will be a
much easier method.
Before repainting you
will need to remove all off
the loose and flaking paint.
Then apply a good water -
thinned paint.
If the existing paint is in
good condition, simply
wash the surface and then
paint.
If paint is peeling it
should be removed and
spot primed in those areas
before applying new paint..
If you elect to remove
paint then stain the sur-
face, it would be best to
have it sand blasted.
A wash -away paint re-
mover could be used. How-
ever, this would be a long
and tedious "process.
If you plan to go ahead
with the stain finish, all
paint must be thoroughly
removed and the surface
vs. stain
wood
cleaned. Then a good water
repellant or wood preser-
vative finish recommended
for exterior wood surfaces
should be applied. Consult
your local paint dealer for
recommended finishes.
Q. Our home has colored
fiberglass awnings which
do not add to the decor of
the house. Could these awn-
ings be painted? - LLO.
A. Fiberglass awnings
can be painted with special
paints made by fiberglass -
reinforced plastic product
manufacturers. This can
probably be obtained from
the dealer from whom the
awnings were purchased.
Great care should be ex-
ercised in choosing the new
color. The awning color
goes clear through the ma-
terial, so both upper and
lower surfaces must be
painted.
If the present awnings
are opague, you'll have no
problem as to color choice.
However, if the awnings
are translucent (if light
goes through them), com-
plementary colors should
be used, keeping in mind
that the original color of
the awning will "bleed"
through. In other words, if
your awnings are now yel-
low and are painted blue,
the result, seen though the
light, will be a shade of
green.
